If you had to pick a European PhD program w/o relocating

    Which would it be? Which is the best respected school and program, in particular for a PhD in NT? It doesn't necessarily have to be evangelical either. What are some of the good ones that don't require you to relocate?

    Euro PhD format is dissertation only (but quite intense research along w/ TAing and undergrad teaching and close relationships w/ your faculty mentor and the library). Thus it is possible to do some w/out relocating.

    I'd recommend University of Bristol. From what I'm hearing it is a good program, especially with Craig Evans working with it.

    Outside of this, SATS and Pretoria, I'd have to think on what else it out there.

    Pretoria is high on my list of possibles (if I ever go that route).

    I'm not sure I can consider SATS at this point. I think they are doing well, but they are too new and unfamiliar to be considered strongly.

    I like Bristol, but they are expensive. I'd also consider UNISA. I'm just not sure how the world looks at South African PhD's. I also know Stellenbosch is possible at a distance if your faculty mentor travels to the states for SBL conferences and you meet there. That would be a good choice then.

    Then there are others like London school of Theology which seems pretty good. I know some like Wales Evangelical Div school (WEST).

    Are there others that are pretty decent or highly respected?

    How about Highland Theological College?

    I think all of the South African schools are good, the ones you mentioned, plus Free State; North-West, which includes the Greenwich School of Theology; Western Cape; and any others.

    Spurgeon's College, London, is excellent.

    Australia used to have some good distance choices. I'm not sure about now. I know Coolamon College went belly up. Charles Sturt is probably still going strong. There may be others.

    Tim,

    Just one follow up. You are aware that the possibilities of teaching in the US with one of these degrees is limited. Institutions are recognizing them more and more but generally you have to have "some other something" to get you in the door.

    I know you have considered this. And I would ask the question, what do you want to do with the degree when you get it?

    great questions... and i have thought about it.

    I would like to teach in higher education, but not necessarily in the USA. Which is partly why i want an international degree. At the very least, i want to have a "writing career" as an option.

    At this point, Pretoria is #1 on my list. LSoT is moving up on my list, but they are so expensive!

    You cannot go wrong with Pretoria. They are an internationally renowned pillar of academic excellence. Years ago I had good correspondence with some of their faculty members.

    As mentioned by someone else, Charles Sturt University in Australia, as well as Edith Cowan University, are two Australian universities that offer a PhD in Theology/Religion areas that are dissertation only. The price may not be as great as UNISA, but they're more competitive than a lot of US doctoral programs.
