We had another hard drive go out on our computer, 2 in 3 years so we bought another one.

We got the new one, hooked it up and the wireless mouse did not work so I hooked up another one. I then called HP after I looked up their support number online via Google.

They answered and told me all the same things "Not a problem sir, got all the info, and said we're sorry about the inconvenience and asked to remote in and see the computer settings.

At that point this guy asks me to pay 299.00 to fix it, and said he would also take care of my registration fee as well to register my computer -- that's when I shut off the computer -- all the while he was typing in notepad 'wud 149.00 be better'? after I told him there is no way I was paying anyone to fix a mouse or new PC ANY amount of money.

He at the same time said he was going to transfer me to Microsoft since it was a Microsoft issue, and the one he transfered me too was saying on the speaker phone to me 'Hello sir, you have won a trip to the Carribeans'.

    Uh...LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW! :wavey:

BTW, I found the real number, and they are sending a new mouse in the mail. I also told them about this scam. They seemed surprised.

Not sure what to do. FIL says call FBI and the would be very willing to shut down the scam.

    - Blessings

That's why we love Apple products. There is but ONE company to deal with and you can walk into their own store and speak to real people about getting things taken care of.

And this is with a computer engineer in the house! He just doesn't want to be bothered anymore so even church is switching to Macs. :)

I went through the exact same thing. We bought a new computer for the office here at church. It was crashing all the time and I could not get any work done. Tech support did sell me the additional coverage (like an idiot) and then still could not get the problem resolved and refused to escalate the issue. When I kept calling back and somehow got an American they immediately escalated the issue and the hard drive had to be replaced as well as we got refunded the money for the additional coverage.

I am glad they got it resolved but I will not purchase from HP anymore.

We can't all afford Macs!!!

My MIL has an Apple laptop. Funny thing, she got an email from someone with links in the email so she was writing them on a piece of paper -- asked what she is doing so she says she is writing them down so she can type them in the address bar -- so my wife says 'Just click on them!' :wavey:

Having sold cars I was suspicious pretty fast jnust not fast enough but at least I pulled the plug on him -- but he starts asking for money? Um. Not happenin'!!!

Good thing I found the real number to HP. They helped really fast -- over-nighted a new mouse, send old one back prepaid envelope.

Well, I know companies used to sell extended coverages and in the past they have been a good deal.

I agree. We had a Best Buy plan on the last one, it covered the hard drive failure. Sometimes they are good to have just in case.

At church, we are going to either slowly acquire them or else lease them - we're not sure. Right now hubby is spending full days at times trying to patch together computers enough to keep them going. But right now we have 3 iMacs (all for the media/projection so that was a no-brainer) and a Mac Mini. The Mini is actually pretty affordable and works great!!!

Don't get me started on MILs and computers.

    Lol Ann.

MIL wouldn't find anything funny right now. Last year she fell mowing the grass and broke her ankle. Yesterday she fell down the steps, broke her other one -- in three places-- and dislocated it. Surgery Friday.

    Ouch!!

Since my FIL passed away in February, my MIL has fallen 3x, been hospitalized twice and in rehab twice (currently in rehab now). She broke ribs, sacrum, pelvis and had 2 concussions. It's so hard because now she's living alone!! We're trying to get her to transfer to the apartments at her facility but she likes her little cottage. But this is our current battle - to get her moved up in her living situation to someplace where there are more people and less obstacles. Fortunately, there is also assisted living, rehab and a nursing home in the same facility so all her friends can still see her right now. Parenting parents can be tough!! I'll be praying for your MIL!! That must have been painful!

Actually, I think if you count the value of money and time spent purchasing and upgrading antivirus programs and dealing with Windows problems, the affordability of a Mac becomes more clear.

And that is not to mention the longevity. I have an aluminum PowerBook that I bought maybe 12 years ago and it is still going strong. My youngest son uses it for college.

If they gave PC's away for free, I wouldn't take them. Too many bad memories of the BSOD days and hundreds of hours spent recovering from virus attacks on the mission field.

I found the number to the scam artist, redialed it and it is 'no longer in service'. It was an 800 number.
