Would say the latter, especially in the books authored by the Apostle Paul!

Most of my "reformed" theology came from reading scripture and believing what it said. I had never heard of John Calvin before I believed the work of God in election, predestination, regeneration and perseverance was clearly taught in scripture.

I have never read anything but excerpts from Calvin, and nothing in depth. Neither have I read anything but excerpts from Arminius or those who followed him, and nothing in depth.

Reformed doctrine, IMHO, is clearly taught in scripture, not just in Paul's writings and not just in the N.T.

I guess that was one of the most humbling of experiences...to read scripture (as a new Christian) and be so excited by what I discovered, thinking I was probably the only person who ever saw it so... and then discover the church had been debating it for 2000 years...

The more I learn the more I realize how little I know...

Calvinism is just a term to describe what the Bible teaches in regards to predestination and election. That is it. John Calvin was an articulate voice in describing what the Bible teaches on these subjects. As a Baptist I see a limited benefit in the Calvinism label. It helps explain what I believe about predestination and election but it stops there. I do not believe in infant baptism or Presbyterian ecclesiology. Calvin did. You could just as easily call it Spurgeonism, as he held to Calvin's soteriology but also to Baptist distinctives.

The doctrines of sovereignty and grace are interwoven in the Bible from Genesis through Revelation. Paul's letters, and the Gospel, emphasize this. So, does the book of Acts, as one follows Paul on his missionary journeys, one can see the hand of God marking every step Paul took.

Calvinism is a man made system of theology based primarily on John Calvin's teachings, who was heavily influenced by Augustine, who was influenced by Gnostic and Manichaen teachings.

Calvinism misrepresents the Father, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the scriptures, and the Gospel. It has some truth to it, but very little and MUCH error.

I've never read Calvin. The doctrines of Calvinism are based on the Bible. Any honest person would say that even if they disagree with the interpretations.

    :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Any understanding or interpretation we have is filtered through everything about us. Calvinism is indeed one perspective (interpretation) as to what scriptures teach...so is Arminianism, so is any version of eschatology...et al.

Calvinism has no eschatology :) John Calvin's bible went from Genesis to Jude.

So, what happened? When you went to the book store to get Clyffe notes on the Bible, were the last few pages torn out?

If Calvinism has no eschatology, then why did you include the books of Daniel, Ezekiel, Zacheriah, Psalms, Malichi, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and 2 Peter?

Ah yes, Mr. Doctorate of Theology, I thought included in the degree program was an English class or two. The name we give Scripture, the Bible, is capitalized.

No, Calvinism ASSUMES it is true, and simply cherry picks scripture to support it's assumption, ignoring and rejecting volumes of scripture that contradicts and refutes it.

Much of Calvinism cannot be found in the scriptures whatsoever, such as Total Inability. There is not one word of scripture that says God cursed man's moral nature so that he is compelled to do evil and cannot choose good. ZERO.

Calvinism twists, perverts, and redefines scripture. For example, Calvinism redefines much scripture that says Jesus died for ALL men, redefining ALL to mean only the ELECT.

Any HONEST person would admit Calvinism redefines much scripture.

Sorry for my lack of clarity, I was not attempting to suggest that Calvinism was an eschatalogical position..... just simply trying to point out on all things "spiritual" we do our best to read, understand and interpret.....and based on this we "carve out" our various positions.

The smiley face was supposed to show my inflection :) It's like going one on one with Michael Jordan and saying he's got no skills. It was pure satire lad although Calvin missed the basket when it came to Revelation and end time prophecy, and is only shooting about 30% from the floor on everything else.

Well sorry to hear that. You might want to start out with Dr. Suess books.

Nah, I heard the Suess got his degree from a diploma mill. I actually learned my English from reading the back of milk cartons from the "MISSING: Calvinist Brains" series.

Not all diplomas are the same. Some are on sheepskin some on goatskin. Others are on some sort of papyrus. Some of us have none of the above. Those who Jesus called from the shores of Galilee we not men of letters. Jesus told Nicodemus, a man of religious letters, he needed to be born again, from above. This master of Israel had not a clue.

We suffer from error of halo and respect of persons.

Credentials, including papacies have been bought and sold. The Lord knows them that are His.

Beware the wolves dressed like sheep.

    What is in your wallet?

    Even so, come Lord Jesus.
