My Mom used to listen to him when I was a kid. The guy would yell, insult callers, use slurs on the air. Wow, had forgotten all about him.

#17 Art Bell, "Achieved dizzying success with oddball topics late at night". OK, how successful are you if the market can't find you a time slot where there are a good number of listeners?

Fr. Charles Coughlin (# 81) got his show cancelled by FDR because he was highly critical of FDR and because he made anti-Semitic comments.

I have listened to several of these people over the years. My folks and everyone else in small-town Indiana liked Arthur Godfrey (# 6) and I used to listen to Kim Komando in the last decade to learn about computers and digital cameras (# 60). I have heard some tape of Long John Nebel (# 13) and I would say that he was smart and knew a lot of people in New York and had an interesting night talk show in New York City. In all, I have seen on tv or heard on the radio a little over half of the people in the list.

 

Depends on how you define success. Bell (and now, Noory) have a target audience: all the weirdos, nutcases, conspiracy theorists, psychic-wannabes, and more. You know, the people who usually hang out after dark looking for UFOs and Bigfoot. So their time slot is exactly where it needs to be.

I was surprised to see O'Reilly down around #70. I figured he'd be up with Hannity & Rush.

Glad to see Dennis Prager made the top 100.

 

Poncho should be glad to see Alex Jones on the list.:laugh:

Yes, O'Reilly was lower than I thought, but he doesn't really do "talk" radio or TV as much as do monologues and interviews.

Does Hannity deserve such a high rating?

I like Prager. Though well deserved I tire of his bash the Muslims theme. He just spends too much time on it, IMO.

 

Meh, he's Jewish; comes with the territory.

I don't listen to Hannity; to be honest, although I didn't mention it before, I was surprised to see Hannity that high on the list. I was also surprised that Hannity and O'Reilly weren't neck-and-neck.

I was also surprised that Medved was higher than Prager. He may be intelligent, but he's whiny. Ah, well, what can you do?

Not really. After all, Art Bell and George Norrie made the list. He's in good company.

 

My math is bad--I should have said that I have seen or heard a little over a quarter of them--not half. I don't know if I should blame the error on old age or public schools or big hurry or lack of IQ or all of the above....

 

Good idea, Salty, to call three different political talk shows! I have called three times in my life to three different local shows about local matters. I have written two or three letters to newspaper editors.

We have had Bob and Tom (# 78) on Indianapolis radio for 25 years but they are raunchy and off-color. People used to repeat their jokes around town but I don't hear anything about them anymore. Jean Shepherd (# 20) grew up in Indiana in the Calumet area, the industrial area around Gary near Chicago, and was properly billed as a raconteur. He was whimsical.

One that is interesting but not on the list is a local named Greg Garrison who does three hours every morning on Indianapolis radio downtown on the Circle (you can see his studio in the window). He is a lawyer and was a prosecutor and is responsible for convicting Mike Tyson of rape committed here in a downtown upscale Indianapolis hotel during a Black Expo. For sometime he did tv commentary on national legal cases but now he stays in Indy. He knows everyone on both sides of the aisle in Indiana and has many nationally known guests and regulars. His father was a well-known family doctor in Indianapolis. You can listen to him live weekday mornings 9 to 12 EDT here:

I've listen to many of these but the one I liked the best I didn't see in the list. Ludlow Porch, he was great and he understood the south, he was one of us. He was the step brother of Lewis Grizzard for the ones who know of him. When he was with ring radio in Atlanta, Ga., Neal Boortz was the liberal guy on that station, if I recall correctly.
I've enjoyed Bruce Williams, Billy Cunningham, Ken Hamblin and a few others.

 

A few more I use to listen to while travling across this country and didn't see on the list; Rollie James, Art Rust, Jr. and Bob Trumpy.

 

Ah taking a stab at the ole "guilt by association" ploy eh? Man you need to get an upgrade for your memory circuits. People have been seeing through that old propaganda trick for years now.

For people unfamiliar with this trick it has another name "the tie in". The would be propagandist (Arbo, who's obviously an amateur) tries to tie a person with a legitimate argument, position or questions in with other wacked out people so as to make even legit arguments, positions or questions seem crazy.

They (propagandists) do this when they have no rebuttal to the position, argument or questions posed by the person they are trying to smear. No, Arbo didn't invent this all by himself. He probably heard it being used by his favorite corporate sponsored tv talking head and decided to mimic them because it's fun to mimic tv talking heads and it makes ya sound smarter than you actually are.

Geez Arbo get some new material man.
