Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson is a distinguished New Testament scholar and explained his position in an article on homosexuality and the Church. He teaches at Emory University, a theological school of the United Methodist Church, which has the mission to train church leaders "grounded in the Christian faith and shaped by the Wesleyan tradition of evangelical piety, ecumenical openness, and social concern." Unfortunately, Emory rejects biblical authority,
[unlike Wesley], supports the ordination of women, and seeks to be at the forefront of institutions valuing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

    To quote him:

I think it is important to state clearly that we do, in fact, reject the straightforward commands of Scripture, and appeal instead to another authority when we declare that same-sex unions can be holy and good. And what exactly is that authority? We appeal explicitly to the weight of our own experience and the experience thousands of others have witnessed to, which tells us that to claim our own sexual orientation is in fact to accept the way in which God has created us.

At least he acknowledges that homosexuality goes against the teachings of sacred scripture. There are some of his ilk who would say we misinterpret scripture when we understand homosexual practices to be sinful.

2Ti 4:1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:
2Ti 4:2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
2Ti 4:3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
2Ti 4:4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

Without an anchor - they are subject to "every wind of doctrine".

However there is MORE to this than simply one-off case of "one institution admitting to a course of apostasy already taken years ago".

The underlying principle is that it is now demanded by society that "good religionists" should reject the teaching in their various traditions of holy writ in order to be "nice" and to avoid the problems of Islamic Jihad or RCC dark ages.

The good religion, the nice religion (Christian or not) is said to be the one willing to reject its own sacred text. And to embrace that text is now "radicalized fundamentalism".

Don't miss it. The day is HERE!

In Canada it is "hate speech" and a civil crime to read certain parts of the Bible over the open air waves.

Coming to a municipality near you.

2007 - the Bible became "hate speech" in California schools via mandate by the Governor.

From doing a google search on this, it appears this was from back in 2008. It's nothing new. It's tragically sad but nothing new. :(

Exactly. And this was the point of my original post elsewhere. When people start stating that we mis-interpret Scripture, show them this.

[And sorry, I do not have the link to the original source from 2008.]

there CANNOT be ANY other authority for a Christian than the Bible though!

God gave his verdict in this matter, and its a "done deal!"

reminds me of my pastor story of how many "NT scholars" that he interacts acts with in Evangelical theology seminars denty even the bodily resurrection/inerrancy/authority of the bible!
    "scholars" indeed!

Every world religion considers homosexual behavior sinful, except far left Christianity. Amazing, huh?
