Sorry I am late replying - I have been out of town.
I am not really familiar with Fleischman, but I am skeptical: very seldom are the NeoCons anything less than true believers.

As for Venezuela, I think they subscribe to the notion that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. It was no secret that there was a tremendous amount of animosity between Chavez and the former POTUS, and the current POTUS really didn't seem to care for him either. Since the US and Venezuela don't have political alliances, it would seem that this presents an opportunity for others to forge alliances.

I am not sure about the "opening," though. Bear in mind that the NeoCons were quite vocal about Iraq being a threat - despite the fact that they couldn't even challenge the "no fly zone" that was placed over their country. With that still fresh in my mind, I have little reason to expect that the NeoCons are just as wrong about this as well.
