By "General maintenance," I mean weekly cleaning, restocking bathrooms, pews, mowing the laws, fix it needs, and anything else that the church needs to keep it self looking good and operating in good fashion!

Sadly, many Churches expect the tithes of the people to pay for the upkeep of the Church.

Which is as unbiblical as baptizing otters.

We have part time couple that cleans the church. Major repairs are contracted.

Not sure what Fred means exactly, perhaps he could expand a bit?

In the Bible, the tithe of the children of Israel was not for the upkeep of the Temple/Tabernacle. Rather, it was for the sustenance of the Levites, the widows, the orphans, and for the refugees in Israel.

To expect the congregation to tithe so that the Church bills can be paid is unbiblical.

Just as unbiblical as one wanting to baptize an otter.

We pay a contractors to cut the grass and clean the church. If we make a mess after cleaning day, then we clean up those areas. I clean my office myself; garbage and vacuuming. Everything else the church takes care of; painting, repairing windows, doors, electrical, plumbing, etc.

I voted #5, even at that I'm not sure that we couldn't get buy without hiring a part time custodian, and hiring out the grounds maintenance.

I like your question and rather than derail Dude's thread, it might be a good start for another thread, I am curious myself about other church's budgets and how they relate to "active" attendance, and what percentages go to paid staff, etc.

Why do I get the feeling you really love your money? Don't you love your church and the people enough to support it by giving 10% out of love and not because some say it is demanded? Just curious.

When i am able to give, i give. How much i give is not anyone's business, but to ease your conscience, when i give, i give more than most of the members.

Anyone who knows me personally knows thata i do not love my money.

We have hired employees (one guy full time who also does any construction we need to do and is currently painting the outside parts of the building and then a number of part time teens). We also have clean-up days for the staff to clean those areas that we know best (sound booth, private offices, storage areas, etc.) and then will at times have larger congregational work as well. We added 25,000 square feet to the building a few years ago - and almost all of it was done by our own hands. We saved a few million that way!

As i said in the clique thread, small church.

Ever hear of quarterly financial reports? They show what the churches receive on a three month basis.

It is easy to figure the percentage of what you gave when looking at the total received, dividing that number by the number of people in the Church, than comparing what you gave to that number.

    That is an interesting take.

Each we have a budget set up, that the church votes on and approves, with all the things that would most likely be needed throughout the year. When people give to the church, it is with the understanding that unless they designate the money to a specific need, the money received will go toward the totality of churches needs, be they salary, missions or light bulbs.

Curious, how do you insure what you give isn't used for upkeep?

Unless specifically stated or directed, all money usually goes into a general fund.

If i am teaching stewardship to church members, i am teaching both faithful and proper stewardship. I will not lie to them, telling them that God requires they give 'x' amount. I tell people to look for needs, not wants, but genuine needs. If they see a need, and they are able to meet that need without putting themselves in need, then give to meet that need.

If they see a need that they cannot meet, tell others of the need.

I say we should not give to the point of being in need ourselves based on instruction found in 1 Timothy 5:8. We should never take away from household needs.
