Earlier this week McDonald’s and other fast food places had their employees go on strike, demanding a raise to $15 an hour, which is a doubling of their average wage.

In order to put pressure on the employers, Huffington Post cobbled together a poorly argued and unsourced article claiming that wages could be doubled with only a 17% increase in prices.

The post went viral, as many on the left happily and gleefully thought this was evidence of corporate greed on the part of McDonald’s restaurants.

Then the HuffPo house of cards began to collapse.

First they issued a correction admitting that the “research assistant” who had supposedly conducted the study was just an undergrad student.

Then the online barrage began, as bloggers and others critiqued the explanation of the calculation provided:

So, they have to charge more ... is money your god? Aren't the employees deserving of a decent wage? Could you live on $7.50 an hour? Easier to live on welfare and food stamps than work for $7.50 ... of course many are probably on food stamps ... unless they were taken out of the system in the House Republican Agriculture Bill.

The Republican war on the poor continues.

    No, but money is yours.

Not every occupation is for making a living, Comrade. Forcing them to raise wages will decrease sales and force them to close. Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-haH! Jesus could learn a thing from Comrade Marx!

Be patient Comrade, and keep up your good propaganda for the Revolution. Soon, all Americans will be equally poor and all live in squalor--except those of us in favored Party positions!

    SERIOUSLY?!?!?

DID YOU NOT READ THE ARTICLE? How can you NOT see that the original premise was fatally flawed? How can you NOT see the impact on the franchise owners (who make up 80% of McDonald's stores)?

You are the worst kind of economist: you make decisions based on the here-and-now, with no regard for the short or long term effects, with the attitude "it'll benefit me now; and who cares about the future 'cause we'll all be dead."

He doesn't care. He has been brainwashed into believing that businesses must go into business for the sole purpose of providing someone a specific type of living. He is against profits.

Fact is if what you are earning cannot support you then get some education and go get a better job. Quit blaming McDonalds for your woes.

Except for management positions most hourly jobs in fast food keep students and retirees employed. Those individuals who have to work full time as a fast food hourly employee typically lack the education and experience necessary to land a better job. Instead of lambasting these establishments they should be lauded for providing jobs.

P.S. I was a dishwasher in high school. $3.50 hr plus 10% of the dining room tips. I was thankful to have money in my pocket. Thank you, Mr. Attman for giving a job to a pimple faced 16 year old back in 1977.

Liberals want to turn everything into a "right". That way no one has to have any personal responsibility.

What this is is a war on personal responsibility.

If there is indeed a "war on the poor", it is a Democratic one, which:

Tells the poor they are 'victims' of oppression, instead of holding out and the hope that they can be victors with opportunities.

Hypocritically condemns the "wealthy", while themselves being in the very same state financially. (see http://www.rightwingnews.com/democrats/top-ten-richest-members-of-congress-only-3-are-republicans/)

Rep. Michael McCaul (R, Texas) – $294.21 Million
Rep. Darrell Issa (R, CA) – $220.40 Million
Sen. John Kerry (D, Mass) – $193.07 Million
    Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, W. Vir.) – $81.63 Million
Sen. Mark Warner (D, Vir.) – $76.30 Million
Rep. Jared Polis (D, Colo) – $65.91 Million
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D, New Jersey) – $55.07 Million
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D, Conn.) – $52.93 Million
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D, Calif) – $45.39 Million
Rep. Vern Buchanan (R, Florida) – $44.39 Million

Tears down individuals who become wealthy through hard work and associates those who become wealthy through cronyism and deceit. (Although there are some in both parties who do this.)

... and I could go on but don't have time to.

For real? That was pretty good pay for a 16 year old dishwasher then. Mr. Attman must have been really decent...and you were probably the envy of your friends with the jingly pockets!

My first "get a paystub" job actually was McDonald's. I was young and thought I was making a TON of money. LOL I don't know why people think they should pay more than minimum. It's business. You don't want to suddenly start paying twice as much for your car because "it does the job" when you paid twice as much for a car that can do amazing things you specifically requested it be able to do and that it was designed to do, so why would you want to suddenly double the wage of an employee who can mop floors floors and flip burgers like always and pay them as much as you pay the person who went to college and studied to be able to manage the entire restaurant's business?

Some jobs are just meant to provide extra income or be stepping stones. It's just silly to try to force every business to provide a living wage. They're a fast food restaurant that employs a low skill set of workers. It would be NICE if they looked at individual situations and paid by that. "Okay, you're a family man, you're a hard worker trying to provide and can work all hours, we'll pay you more" vs "you're a teenager who is not available beyond very limited hours working for your cell phone and you plan to leave after you graduate high school next year so we'll hire you at minimum."

That would be nice. That would be decent. That would be thoughtful and human and I'd love to see THAT being used by these mass employers. Common sense. People who have been there working for raises for ten years...people who have some 16 year old come in and make the same wage because the minimum got raised, and they don't raise the wage of the older person to make up for it...that's what could change. You can't force it though.

But if there's something to complain about, that would be more like it! NOT that unskilled employees in grunt jobs are getting grunt pay. That's just normal.

My first pay check job was inserting newspapers after school and on Sat for 2.70 an hour at 13 years of age. To bad the silly child labor laws prevents that today.

My first real job in 1973 was as a p/t janitor (the title was actually "porter") at McCrory's Department Store. I made $1.60 an hour. No benefits - except having a great boss who taught me a lot about life.

I think it was around 1977 or so before I made over $2 an hour. I have it written down somewhere.

Like Aaron, my first job was bucking bales before my freshman year of high school. I ran a hay crew around my small hometown in north Missouri every summer for three years after that. There was no way I could make a living doing that. It was supposed to put some money away for college for me, but I got a baseball scholarship at a Division II school and wound up buying my first new car with my savings. I was blessed in that manner, as there is no way a high school student today can "make a living" at McDonald's or any other fast food franchise. That's isn't a big surprise to anyone except, it appears, to you.

The jobs aren't there to "make a living." They are a great way, however, for high school and college students to transition from adolescence to adulthood. They can save money for college, pay a bit to their parents perhaps, for allowing them to remain at home after high school. They learn responsibility, budgeting, and how to take care of themselves. The people "striking" the other day (I don't think anyone at their restaurants missed them while they were making a ridiculous spectacle of themselves) are adults who don't seem to understand the economy of their own employer, nor do they seem to understand they are past the age of employment in the industry, though if they keep at it, they may transition back into that employment category as they approach retirement age. Seems fast food also provides a decent supplementary income for those on SS.

One of the men interviewed in Kansas City -- one of the seven cities where McDonald's employees "went on strike" -- was in his 30s. His complaint that he couldn't support himself on those wages was aired across the metro area. I don't know how many people I heard comment that "of course he couldn't, and he shouldn't be trying. He should have stopped being a 'kid' a long time ago."

No one expects fast food to be a career, not unless one becomes management or buys a franchise. Everyone knows that -- why don't you?

I know there are other low-paying jobs in the world, jobs where men and women are trying to make ends meet with very little string to stretch that far. However, the great thing about this country -- the thing that always has been true, and continues to be true despite liberal lies to the contrary -- that anyone can be anything they want to be. Certainly it requires heart, determination, drive, ambition, and those double dirty four letter words many despise: hard work. They should try it sometime. They might be surprised.

Unfortunately, the liberal drum beat of "fairness" (which actually means "unfairness" where it is expected that someone gets something for nothing) and "equality" (which actually means "inequality" where it is expected someone will be chosen not for talent and ability but ethnicity and economic status) has convinced the myriad of young men and women, who could follow the footsteps out millions of Americans previously able to work their way out of poverty, that it isn't possible without a lowering of the bar.

This attitude is the problem, not the wages paid in this country.

    TND - Great post!

    I especially liked this line-

"...the thing that always has been true, and continues to be true despite liberal lies to the contrary -- that anyone can be anything they want to be. Certainly it requires heart, determination, drive, ambition, and those double dirty four letter words many despise: hard work."

    Amen.

Liberals do not want to have to work hard and overcome odds. They want it handed to them because "it" is a himan right and they should not have to work for it. For heavens sake Obama said that he did not ask Putin to give back Snowden because "I shouldn't have to".

Liberal arrogance and laziness in its purest form.
