    Hi All,

I'm considering buying solar panels for my house to reduce or eliminate our electric bill. We live in MO and our current electric company is offering rebates of up to 60% off the purchase. So if I needed a 50K system they would pay 30K, all I would need to come up with would be 20K and the Federal Gov is offering taxes breaks on this amount. However I hear that our Federal Gov also sends you a 1099 with the rebate amount so my taxes would be sky high for this year. I know this is a lot to swallow and my head is spinning. Anyone out there have any advice or experience in solar panels on the house?

I have NO idea but I think it's fantastic to do that! I'd LOVE to do that and maybe someday if we come into money, we can consider that. :)

Brother..... who convinced you to go this route? Have you explored other alternatives....for example wind mill generated? From what Ive seen, the ROI is poor at best & the maintenance costs are high.

    Sooo...you'd be solar saint? hehehehe!

Nope, just have read about it and had solar lighting in NM, long before it was fashionable in other places. LOL

I'd personally want to try it on a small scale first to see how well the concept works with my life. IE if I had a detached garage, workshop, etc., before investing in an entire home. I'd want to talk to others who have done it in the same area, see if they'd let me come take a walk through and talk about issues, maintenance, surprises, all that jazz. What happens in a hail storm? How much is insurance? How much does humidity affect their lifetime use, etc.?

I was reading of a vineyard that did this and it sounded so neat, and looked cool too.

Wind generators are usually illegal. You need to have all kinds of permits to install one and I know for a fact our village won't let any be put in. But solar panels can be put in without hassle.

What is ROI and what maintenance costs? My neighbor had panels pit on and now doesn't have an electric bill. My electric bill averages over $300 per month in the summer time. Wind is out of the question where I live., but thanks for the advice.
