I am interested in knowing to what extent church discipline is exercised among forum participants.

I haven't seen it exercised for decades (in my limited experience).

Never really hear anything preached about it nor have I ever seen it applied, look forward to the discussion on this thread.

We teach it and have practiced it. I don't recall any that had to go before the whole church although one young woman came to confess to the pastor of her sin and asked if she could address the church and she was allowed. But in most cases, a person is disciplined and they leave in a huff. So we will let them go and welcome them back in with open arms should they repent.

We have practiced it on a few occasions. Sadly it is yet to result in repentance.

Sad, true, but remember, while that's an important goal of church discipline, it's not the only goal.

The other goal is to protect the integrity of the church and it's Gospel message.

Now-a-days the bad fish usually jump the pond before they're fried.

They do, but we still have gone through the process of church discipline.

I have seen church discipline done in several ways, but the one way which is redeeming is to go alongside someone to help them work through it.

That is absolutely the goal with church discipline and hopefully it doesn't even need to get to a "discipline" stage at all. Instead, it would be a friend going to a friend, confronting him about something in love, the friend agrees, repents and seeks discipleship and counsel to grow and leave that sin, whatever it may be.

But unfortunately, often when it comes to a "confronting" kind of thing, the person does not respond well. :(

If it isn't done, a church has no place to do the full gamut of "discipline".

I think people who won't accept the walking along side will eventually leave anyway.

Yep. That's what I've tended to see. They don't want to accept the fact that what they are doing is wrong, excuse it and so forget the "walking along side" thing because "I'm not doing anything wrong!" So they get all in a huff, pack up their sin and leave. :(

At least, in that situation, they do not remain remain in the church with impunity. Church discipline is, at its roots, restorative. Consequently, even when they absent themselves, they do so knowing the position of the church; as does those witnessing the process. Furthermore, the congregation can now pray specifically that God would eventually be pleased to grant mercy and grace to the persons under discipline.

I have been encouraged by this poll. If it is a representative sampling -- a big assumption, that, I know -- it tends to imply that church discipline is not entirely lost among Baptists. Praise God for that!
