Words have meaning and by words we sometimes describe ourselves or others or circumstances. By word we are judged. What got me thinking of this is by reading another post that said, I became a better and more knowledgeable Christian. In my conversations with people I hear people say of someone else, he is a good person, when the bible say's, there is none good, no, not one. The words I was lucky is used a lot by Christians or I had the good fortune of obtaining this or that. I know that it is easy to get caught up with modern day words and phrases even as a Christian, but in doing so are we really understanding what we our saying. We should give heed to our conversation. I think we should give glory to God in all our conversation. In the book of James it gives us instructions on our conversation, James 4: 13-17 Go to now, ye that say, today or to morrow we will go into a city and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour that appeareth for little time and then vanisheth away. For what ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

That was me that said I became a better and more knowledgable Christian. And that is a fact....I am better and more knowledgable than I was 10 years ago. I am judging myself against the person I was 10 years ago. Not boasting, but rejoicing that God has opened my eyes to the truth

I think another problem we have is finding fault in everything other people do and say and not examining ourselves.
    Matthew 7:3-5

3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Sorry this offends you JohnnyReb but I had rather have the wounds of a faithful friend than the kisses of an enemy which are deceitful, Prov 27:6. The bible say's in Prov 27:2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger and not thine own lips. There is no such thing as better Christians, we are not in competition with one another or are we to look at ourselves as being better than someone else or even to our own selves as getting better and better. We are all sinners saved by grace and no man recieveth anything except it be given unto him from above. I thought of another phrase that people use a lot: He or she may be a bad person or have done a lot of evil but down deep they have a good heart. I have heard preachers come across with this statement not knowing the scripture that say's Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it ? and Matt 15:9 Out of the heart proceedeth evil thought ect. and out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speeketh. I think as Christian's we should not pattern our speech after the world but let our speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that we may know how to answer every man, Col 4:6.

Oh no offense taken sir. I just wanted to clarify on what I was talking about. Sorry if it came across harshly.

I agree with what you say mostly here in this quote. But just want to express I see no harm in judging MYSELF against MYSELF. I did not say I was a better Christian than anyone else....only that I am a better Christian than MYSELF was in the past. If a simple word like " better" isn't acceptable how about more obedient? I am a more obiediant Christian than I was 10 years ago. I just see now harm in judging yourself and holding your own feet to the fire and knowing you are better than you were in the past. Of course if speaking of being a better Christian is for boasting purposes then I totally agree. I would never boast about my richousness because I know that I fall short of the glory of God.
