Paul’s purpose for writing Romans 6:15-23
Paul was giving the Roman Christians genuine reasons why
they are able to stop being slaves of sin, which results in eternal death!

    Romans 6:

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace?
    Certainly not!
    • They are sinning because they are “under grace” (and believe in OSAS?).

16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey,
you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether (slaves) of sin leading to death,
or (slaves) of obedience leading to righteousness?
    • They can choose who they want to be the slaves of: sin or obedience.

17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin,
yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
    • They believed in the gospel, were born again, and delivered from the bondage of sin.

18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
    • Having been born-again caused them to be set free from sin, and
(with the help of the Holy Spirit) to be ABLE to be slaves of righteousness.

19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.
For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness,
and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness,
so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.
    • Paul tells them to really actually BE slaves of righteousness.

20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.
    • In their old lives, they were free: there was NO choice to be made (re: 6:16).

21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed?
For the end of those things is death.
    • All they had was eternal death, which is the wages of their sin.

22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God,
you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
    • Since they were sinning, were they really slaves of God (yet)? NO.

23 For the wages of sin is (eternal) death,
but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
    • The opposite of sinning is … NOT sinning and being “in Christ” unto eternal life.

This passage is a perfect example of Paul’s super-tactful method of writing
to the churches, all of which he founded (except this church at Rome).

His method was to mix together: blessings, edifications, warnings, exhortations,
    threats, explanations, encouragements, promises, etc.
IMO, one reason was so he would not be unpopular or unwelcome in these churches.

    This passage reveals:
    • BACs are capable of being slaves of God, slaves of obedience, slaves of righteousness.
    • BACs can actually attain righteousness and holiness on the way to eternal life.
    • All sinners and slaves of sin deserve and receive eternal death (see 6:16, 6:21, 6:23).
    • OSAS is false.

Evangel7, do you have any idea why Jesus Christ went to that cross????????

Your missing it brother. I thank God that understanding correct bible applications is not necessary for justification, but the problem is we have a judgment to face and part of that will be how we handled the word of truth.....

James3:1 - "My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation."

I am fully aware of this admonition and take it seriously, hope you do also.

It would have served your position better to actually read Romans 6 because the chapter starts off with how this key Bible doctrine is based solidly on the death of Christ for us.

You appear to be instinctively avoiding the chapter. Is it possibly because you are apparently aware that your traditions do not stand the test of scripture in this case.

    Or is there another reason?

    in Christ,

    Bob

 Brother! Go read all my post in his other thread on Romans 6, hardly avoiding, I thoroughly explained the passage for him, what else can I do? Should I return to the yoke of bondage again? Or should I stand fast in the grace given me in Christ? I will choose the latter.

E-7 has just posted key portions of Romans 6 - your response that you do not understand how the verses in Romans 6 in the OP relate to the cross of Christ indicates a lack of familiarity with the first half of the chapter itself.

If in fact you do understand how the first and second half of the chapter fit together - now is a good time to post your view-- with texts.

The Bible need not be held at a distance.

    in Christ,

    Bob

Careful with the bearing a false witness there brother, it just might wind you up in hell according to E7's understanding/or lack thereof of Christ's work on the cross.

My response does not indicate that I do not understand how the verses relate, but rather E7 does not understand how they relate. Nice spin there though!

Been there, done that, check out his other thread.

Instead of your side-stepping (above) of the 9 verses and my short comment for each one
... you should face the challenge squarely, and show how my comments are incorrect.

Because I desire that you have some credibility around here.

Note: I have presented one comment line for each verse.
Some of these comments are new, and they have not been dealt with before.

This passage invites misunderstanding, and so requires some undivided attention to grasp what Paul is saying!
This is necessary instead of people coming and pointing to various and sundry other Bible passages.

Those who do not wish to tackle the passage to discern what Paul is saying, please do not post.

This is incorrect. Paul just finished explaining to the Christians that they were "made" righteous by "the obedience of one", which is the Lord Jesus Christ. (This is supported nicely by Paul's letter to the Ephesians when he states - "not of yourselves").

Here is the quote - "For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous". (Ro5:19)

Key words - "made" and "obedience of one". Note that no saints obedience to any law or commandment will "make' he or she righteous. It is only by the obedience of Christ and His imputed righteousness to His saints.

Nowhere in the scripture will we find any reference to the Christians Paul is speaking to that they are sinning and doing so because they feel they are under grace. Nor do we find any mention where Paul says they believed in OSAS.

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace?
    Certainly not!
    - Certainly not, what else needs to be explained? -

    Pretty good!

Nowhere does the scripture say they were sinning. "were they really slaves of God (yet)? NO" Actually, the answer to that question was given in the text - "and having become slaves of God" - not sure how you missed that one. The answer would be YES.

It's a bit more complex than what you state here. Those "in Christ" still sin, even you admit that, so to say NOT sinning leads to Eternal life is misleading.

I don't look at Paul's writings as something "tactful" he did as though he gave much thought about how he should say something, we do that, but Paul was writing as the Spirit gave him the message to deliver and with the correct phrases and words in which to express it. Otherwise, if it was all Paul writing, he would no doubt have messed up and created contradictions in his letters.

They are not only capable but the scripture declares they have been "made" slaves of God and slaves of righteousness.

They are being formed into the image of God via the Spirit which indwells within on their way to the final stage of their transformation which will be their glorified resurrected bodies.

    3rd point is true.

The passage isn't really speaking about eternal security (OSAS) but if anything it is leaning hard in favor of it.

Thanks for the opportunity to teach! :wavey:

That's it? Have I refuted your opinion that well that you have become speechless? The goal here is the truth, if repentance is in order then humble thyself :love2:

we have died to the law, for now we have been made alive again in Christ, and we now walk and live in him, thru the Holy Spirit, for by abiding in Him, and yielding to the Spirit, we accomplish the christian life...

paul wrote it to tell us that we are saved by grace, ansd live in grace, and that we do not keep the Law in order to get right with God, bu that due to us now being right with God, we evidence that by our good works and lives we lead!
