Just ordered this book and hope I made a good buy. Since this topic comes up ALL THE TIME here, on FB, and everywhere it may be wise to have a good book on the topic. This review http://www.fundamentallyreformed.com/2008/08/02/god-gave-wine-gentry/
says it will be a good buy. Also the author suggests a book on Calvin & Luthers views on the topic, which seem to be in favor of drinking in moderation. Strange how John MacArthur quotes from Calvin all the time, yet himself believes that drinking is wrong. Is mac aware of what Calvin and Luther believed? This may be one of several areas where I disagree with Mac. Has anyone read it and what do you think?

The Fundamentalist movement (IFB) seems to be as blind as a bat to this issue and seems to be overrun by traditionalism and by those that do not hear what the other argument has to say. Sure not drinking in front of some that will lead them to sin is very wise, however drinking a beverage in front of my TV away from their presence is okay. Its wrong for such people to try and militate total control from a beverage even when away from them!! Thats a control problem not a Biblical problem! Fundamentalists are often afraid of those that disagree with them, and wont even read such a book, but will instantly condemn it. Such blind arrogance, its sickening and sad.

The other day ago I enjoyed a Mikes Pink Lemonade at a reception. I felt ozzy a little at first, but that was quickly taken away after I drank some water and got some food in my stomach. I did not get drunk and enjoyed my beverage. I felt weird because its been more than 6 months since I had a beverage, but I was glad I drank one as it was very enjoyable. One can make their beverage like the wine in the Bible times by mixing it with water and food!.

SIGH - Why do you need a book to know what the Bible says? How about just go by what Scripture says?

You're serious Ann? I don't get your point, it seems like you're just irritated. I know you're not a 'Bible onlyist'.

John give us some pointers from the book if you can and get a chance.

Well, it seems this poster always needs a book to find out what the Bible says. Really, I don't see the need for a book on what the Bible says about alcohol because it's not exactly hidden info!

I love a Lambrusco with steak and a white sparkling wine with pasta/red sauce type dishes. Outside of those there isn't much else that interests me. I've tried beer 4-5 times recently and ended up dumping most of it. For the life of me, I just don't see what people like in beer.

Moderation is one thing but to many are just trying to justify their buzz(drunk).

Such a mindset would have failed you from both Bible college and seminary. The Bible is the authority yes, but we need to read books and mature believers do so.

Nobody but an infernal scoundrel will sell whisky, and nobody but an infernal fool will drink it. ~Sam Jones

Electa LaValley Williams was my great-great-grandmother on my Daddy's side. She was a Sam Jones kind of Methodist railing against red liquor, card playing and going to the motion picture show. Great-great Grandmother Williams was the founder and first president of the Women's Christian Temperance Movement of Osceola, New York populated by more Holsteins than humans. She and her husband Sylvanus owned and operated the Temperance Hotel in downtown Osceola where you could get a good meal and a comfortable bed but you could not get red liquor, a card game or see a motion picture show.

From a governor down to a dog pelter, I would not vote for a man that touches, tastes or handles whisky to save my life, and you can never redeem America with a legislature whose breath is tainted with whisky. ~Sam Jones

Every time one of these threads pop up I get a picture in my mind of my five-foot-nothing G-G-Grandma standing on the porch of the Temperance Hotel (the building is still there) shouting at the men going into the Osceola Hotel where you could get something to drink while you were card playing.

I'm not only not going to drink but I'll fight it to perdition, and when perdition freezes, then I'll fight it on the ice. If you can make it any stronger than that, put my name to it. ~Sam Jones
