Wacky World of Minneapolis Mayoral Election

The city of Minneapolis has adopted Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) otherwise known as Instant Runoff Voting (IRV). This means that voters must choose their top three candidates, in order of preference. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the first choice votes the candidates with the fewest votes are eliminated and their 2nd and 3rd choice votes are transferred to the other candidates and a recount is taken to see if any candidate now exceeds the 50% threshold and is the winner. Under RCV, it is possible that the candidate with the most votes in the first round could end up losing the election as subsequent rounds need to occur until a candidate has more than 50% of the vote.

You can see how that works here:
    http://vote.minneapolismn.gov/rcv/

The city also lowered the filing fee for running for mayor to $20. The result is that there are 35 candidates running for mayor. The understatement of the decade would be that it has led to some confusion amongst voters. Let's take a look at some of the candidates, shall we? Here are their names, ages, political party or cause and some of their policy positions.

Christopher Zimmerman, age 42, Libertarian. Wants transparency in government and to reduce embarrassing incidents involving the Minneapolis Police. Opposes building new Vikings stadium.

Jaymie Kelly, age 63, Stop Foreclosures Now! Wants to regulate banks so it is harder for them to foreclose on houses. Raise minimum wage to $15. Stop racial profiling.

Captain Jack Sparrow, age 62, Count All Ranking. Elimination of private property ownership, use foreclosed housing as free public housing for the homeless, legalize drug use and prostitution.

Jeffery Wagner, no age given, Democrat. Wake Up Minneapolis! You are living in a dream world! If elected mayor he promises not to go to strip clubs anymore. (he did have a YouTube video that went viral wherein he walks out of a lake onto land and curses at the camera. see it here): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BODbfSBvnTo

Bill Kahn, age 56, Last Minneapolis Mayor. Eliminate office of the mayor in favor of city manager model and reduce number of city council seats to five.

The Rock, age: "old enough", We The People. Strengthen the ability of the mayor to know and understand the needs of the people. Break the bank's control over our money.

Kurtis Hanna, age 28, Pirate Party. Increase transparency of government. Create Warrantless, Surveillance Free Zones within the city where the government cannot snoop. Legalize marijuana.

Troy Benjegerdes, age 38, Local Food/Energy. Create incentives for solar energy. Create a local currency or barter system so citizens can pay property taxes with something besides US currency.

There are also two communists running, one is a Leninist, the other a Trotskyite. You can meet them here:

So this is what you get with Ranked Choice Voting. It is possible that one of these nutjobs could win. Anybody still in favor of the idea?

So which one of the candidates listed above would you accept as your mayor, if IRV ended up selecting one of them?

None of them look particularly happy to be running for mayor.

Did you make the connection in this policy description for Kurtis Hanna, age 28?:

    • Create Warrantless, Surveillance Free Zones within the city where the government cannot snoop.
    • Legalize marijuana.
Dude wants to be able to get high without the paranoia of someone looking for him!

If he's smoking pot, he's gonna find something else to be paranoid about anyway.
