Is the Great Pretender playing politics with the insurance premiums?

    The real reason the red states are getting hit hardest is because they tended to be light- to moderately-regulated states to begin with. Now the ACA is usurping state government's rights to regulate its own insurance companies and replacing working systems with the unworkable a highly expensive federal guidelines.

    Supporters of the ACA point out that the higher rates don't take into account the subsidies available some state residents, so the published rates aren't reflective of what they will pay. But the idea that somehow insurance cost increases don't matter because there are subsidies for people doesn't wash, because subsidies are paid for by taxpayers. Maybe the policy holder doesn't pay the price, but we do.

    Isn't it more likely that blue states have set up their own exchanges rather than go with the federal government exchanges and therefore are more customized and tailored for their citizens? Also, they have an incentive to keep costs down whereas the federal government, not so much.

    There are only 16 state-owned and run exchanges. So there are a lot of blue states that didn't set up an exchange. In Missouri, a red state that has a Democratic Party governor who was going to set up an exchange despite protests from voters across the state and the Republican dominated legislature, the voters acted by referendum to establish law that Missouri could not spend the money to set up an exchange. Why some blue states don't have exchanges, I don't know. Maybe their Democrats are smarter than Democrats in other states.

    Yes, we are a very red state also, with an already established exchange and a Democrat governor. One house is Democrat and the Senate is Republican. We have two Republican Senators and five of six US Congressmen Republican. Not that I am for the exchange concept 100%, but it was working fine before the national democrats ever got their noses stuck in it. The state exchanges are without a doubt far superior to the mess of Obamacare.

    One unrelated question, since you are a member of the FEHB, have you noticed how little the premiums have gone up in the past two years compared to the years before that. About three years ago, I dropped BCBS and switched to Cigna. It is cheaper with the same coverage.

    I've got Tricare. I'm not completely familiar with the other offerings. Tricare hasn't gone up in, like, forever.

    That is right, you are in a different system. Before the ACA was passed our premiums on the civilian side would shoot up about 10% per year. As of the last two or so years, it has gone up a few dollars.

    I am not a supporter of Obamacare in any fashion, but am puzzled why the premium increases went down so much. It may not even be related.
