Emphasizing the 'International' in NIV

    I live a long distance from Shanghai,but last weekend I went there. Among other things I visited a secular bookstore. In one section there were about five shelves of Bibles in English. There were exactly three KJVs and all the rest were various editions of 2011NIVs. No other versions were present at all.

    I bought a small NIV --Anglicised edition --Hodder & Stoughton Publishers. But it was printed in China by CTPS.

    The print is small but I don't have a problem with that ... yet.

    Two young women at a Church led me there. They said they use a modern Chinese version on one page and the NIV (I assume the 84 version) on the other.

    How international are other English translations in hard copies?

    I know in China the NRSV and the ESV both have wide currency in the official printing presses of their bilingual Bibles. Of course the Chinese version is almost invariably the Chinese Union Version (Heheben). If you've met some KJVOs in America and haven't talked Bible versions with Chinese leaders, you ain't seen nothing yet. Many would make KJVO nuts look tame.

    Interesting. When preparing for a mission trip to Burma now Myanmar I was a bit surprised to learn they still use the translation done by missionary Judson.
