....a command or practice that is mentioned in the Bible (esp. in the NT) is simply "cultural" and/or "not for us today"?

Simple answer is context, grammar, genre and occasion for writing. What command specifically?

For this non-seminary trained lay person who knows very little about such things as biblical language(s), etc., could you be a bit more specific than just giving a one- or three-word answer to the OP.

As to "command," I was not referring to one specific command, but rather to just NT commands in general.

As a layman, I would say two things would help determine that question, the Holy Spirit in us and common sense. That is my guide.

Your question is a great question that MANY Christians desire to know.

I don't know if you will like this answer, but it is simply, Love one another.

Jhn 15:17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

Rom 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

Rom 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

    See also 1 Thes 4:9, 1 Pet 1:22, 1 Jhn 3:11, 1 Jhn 3:23, 1 Jhn 4:7,11,12, 2 Jhn 1:5.

That we love one another and love all men is commanded over and over again in the NT. Rom 13:10 is a good rule to live by, do nothing that works ill to your neighbor. So, of course you wouldn't lie, or steal, or covet your neighbors wife, etc...

I have trouble believing that anything that has been preserved in the Bible isn't, to at least some extent, "for us today."

I'd be very careful about ignoring or discounting a command or practice that is recorded in God's word.

Check me on this, but isn't it correct that all of the Ten Commandments were reinforced in the New Testament--except the observance of the Sabbath?

If it is not about morality than most likely it is a cultural law.

    The Lords day sabbath-

9 there doth remain, then, a sabbatic rest to the people of God,
