R.C. Sproul, reformed theologian, was saying this morning on a tv broadcast (tv show Renewing Your Mind) that people remark that our society is post-Christian or neo-pagan. He said that he himself believes that we are neo-barbarian--highly educated barbarians. He added that we are very near the law of the jungle in this country.

    What do you think?

Look at the many posts on this board that do nothing but attempt to insult and add nothing to the discussion and you have your answer.

I think eight-year-old TV shows -- that was a broadcast from shortly after Terri Shiavo was allowed to die -- don't reflect accurately what Sproul's views of the U.S. might be now, particularly since that reaction was delivered in the heat of the moment.

I would not limit that comment to Americans. I think most people would fit the category of neo barbarians. Take away their food, water, homes, threaten their children and their lives, and watch how barbaric people can become.

I don’t know who first said that we are never more than “72 hours away from anarchy,” but I think it holds true of people anywhere. Take away their ability to survive and some people will quietly die, but most will fight for survival.

Here's an example of you attempting to insult and adding nothing to a discussion.

I am not sure that Terri Schiavo's case had anything to do with that broadcast. He was talking about Kant, Kant's belief in God, and the nature of God. In the context of replying to the charge that we are post-Christian or neo-pagan, R.C. Sproul said that we were neo-barbarian. It got me to thinking because I have assumed that we were just post-Christian.

He added that the judicial system was broken down and that we were very near the law of the jungle.

I think that you can make a good case for the Senate Majority Leader as a neo-barbarian, don't you? And perhaps even the President himself falls into that category.

Another good example of barbarian Americans is your recent thread about greedy merchants who open stores on Thanksgiving Day and greedy materialistic people who rush to "Christmas" shop on Black Friday. Since Americans are mostly non-Christians, why are they rushing to shop for the Birth of Jesus? It might be mostly the lower class that rushes out to shop because I don't think that the stores catering to the rich bother to open so early on Friday. Can you imagine Tiffany's opening early on Black Friday?

This was a 2009 broadcast so it was 4 years after the Schiavo case.

My bad. He said basically the same thing after Schiavo. I remember seeing it back then. I figured it was a repeat, and didn't check it out to be sure. However, I think the term "neo-barbarian" is nonetheless reactionary, and probably even better described as "over"-reactionary.

OK, do you use the term post-Christian, as I was, or do you have some other term to describe us today? I don't think that we are really pagan as most Americans seem to think that religion is an escapist crutch from reality. We seem to agree with Marx that religion is the opiate of the masses, who cannot face the horror of their situation as described by Darwin and the other atheists.

Post-modernist, which is basically the same thing. It describes the whole of society, not just in the U.S., but most of the developed world.

If you're speaking of U.S. and European society as a whole, you're right. If you speak of that attitude within the church, I don't see it. What you describe is what I call post-modernism.

I believe it's more revealing to look at the many posts that attempt to defend a known liar and abortionist.

    Yes its true:

    Jeremiah 17
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Notice it's the human heart, not just Jeremiah's or the nation of Israel.

It's not only deceitful but it's deceitful above all things.
It's not only wicked but it's wicked to the point of desparation.

No one can know it, not even of their own heart without a direct revelation from God the Holy Spirit (conviction of sin) who can be grieved and quenched.

As the day grows darker and the sunset of man's reign upon earth approaches, the restraint of the Spirit will recede from the earth and humanity will revert to it's unbridled nature as stated in Jeremiah 17:9-10.

The previous sentence is my summary view of:

    Luke 21
26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

    2 Thessalonians 2
    3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

2 Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
