I have the book How to Read the Bible for all its worth, however the authors are Charismatic and seem to think women can be pastors. I also have the book The Hermeneutical Spiral, however its way too technical as it was assigned in a seminary class.

I also have this book of which is on my shelf that I did not read. 30 Days to Understanding the Bible in 15 Minutes a Day: is it any good and is it worth the effort? Its not the Reformed way of doing Hermeneutics, however if I were to get RC's book on the topic I am afraid I might come away with a Preterist view of Eschatology and away from my Calvinistic Dispensationalist views. I wish to study the Bible more in 2014 & a good aide will probably help but it must be a good one with the right interpretations of the text and not one that promotes Preterism, Post Millennialism, Charismatic Theology, or a gender neutral view of the role of women in the church.

If you wish to study the Bible then study the BIBLE and not books about the Bible.

Brother, you aren't going to find an aid that is perfect.

Here's how I study the Bible ... if it means anything to anyone.

    I read it.

Mostly chronologically by bulk, but also topically in smaller sections when the case arises which is often - sometimes daily. Sometimes, I'll try to meditate on certain things I've read for a few days trying to allow the Lord to squeeze every drop He wants to out of the passage for me to understand.

I read it in various translations. Sometimes the same passages 2, 3, or 4 times in different translations.

If there is something I am wanting to understand better or to find more about, I go to one of a few on-line commentators that I trust and read what they have to say. I don't take any man or woman's word for it, but I do really desire to hear what others have to say.

David Guzik is one of my favorite commentators, but I don't agree with 100% of all he says. Same thing for every commentator I use.

These outside aids are just that. Imperfect and outside the Bible and to be weeded through carefully.

One thing I've been convicted of about reading for 2014 is that I don't pray enough when reading the Bible nor do I memorize enough.

I can never remember the site, so when I want to look at something of his - like last week's Sunday School lesson was John 15 - I google "David Guzik John 15" and it takes me right there.

I always just type his name and the bible chapter.

He's really good and he gives other good people's comments in his own. He goes verse by verse. I don't agree with all he says, but that's just me.

But I think he really does a great job.
