I had forgotten the GOP was a do-nothing party back in the mid-40's.

Not much has changed. They still are a party of special interests and of doing nothing.

Listen to the speech. It could be given right now and be just as true.

I agree. I was surprised how "today" Truman's speech was. It could be given today and be just as truthful and relevant.

I do not agree with you much politically, but the only Democrat my Dad ever voted for was Truman over Dewey in the 1948 election. Just remember, doing nothing is better than doing something that dumbs down the population and robs Americans of their dreams and goals of self achievement.

This analogy to 1948 is false because Obama has the US Senate so he has a divided Congress, not a Republican Congress. I saw President Truman during the 1948 Whistlestop Campaign and Barack Hussein Obama is no Harry S. Truman.

You miss the point of the OP. The issues are basically the same and the GOP was a party of "No" then and is still a party of "No". Both were obstructionist and both represent special interests at the expense of the people.

In time I believe that Truman will go be viewed as one of the top ten presidents in American history.

The point is that Obama is not facing a GOP Congress. Nor can the Democrats show that the GOP in the House has done anything to halt their legislative program of big spending. The rollbacks in Congress have been that the Democrats have been backing away from Obamacare until after the November elections, as everyone knows.

Furthermore, Democrats are retiring on a massive level as they realize that big government has been an economic disaster.

Obama has caused a massive recession and the Democrats need to stand up and take responsibility for what they have done. Instead, Obama has said that racism is the basis for the opposition to him--not the economy.

There is no comparison between the 1948 opposition to 16 years of Democrat total power to the current GOP opposition to the Obama economic policies that have led to high unemployment, a declining middle class, massive federal debt, widespread corruption in federal administration, stagnant incomes, and loss of health insurance coverage for millions of people.

Truman won in 1948 but his disputes with organized labor and his foreign policy problems led to the Republican landslides of 1952 and 1956.

Obama's economic disaster and the Democrat revolt over his foreign policy should lead to a GOP landslide in November, but we can't underestimate the GOP's innate ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Not much has changed. Looks like the Democrats are still the party that blames everything on the Republicans. Even though they had a majority in the House and Senate from 1945-1946 they didn't pass their agenda, then they blame the Republicans in 47-48. Similarly the Dems had a majority in 2009-2010 and they didn't raise taxes on the rich, didn't pass environmental laws, and barely got health care passed.

I found it very disheartening that Truman's entire speech was slamming the Republicans. He didn't lay out a vision for the country.
