    Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He probably made as many, or more important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 32 Presidents preceding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.​

    [FONT=&quot]The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence , Missouri . His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.[/FONT]

    [FONT=&quot]When he retired from office in 1952 his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.[/FONT]

    [FONT=&quot]After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.[/FONT]

    [FONT=&quot]When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."[/FONT]

    [FONT=&quot]Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."[/FONT]

    [FONT=&quot]As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.[/FONT]

    [FONT=&quot]Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, too many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale (i[/FONT][FONT=&quot].[/FONT][FONT=&quot]e.[/FONT][FONT=&quot],[/FONT][FONT=&quot] Illinois ).[/FONT]

    [FONT=&quot]Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference![/FONT]

    Being a "yellow dog" Republican I never cared much for old Harry. I remember when he said the Republicans were like a "floogie" bird. On reflection I must admire him.

    Apparently like most VPs he was unaware of what was going on in DC. Whether true or not rumor was that he was not clued in on the development of the Atomic Bomb. He took over the presidency after Roosevelt died in Georgia accompanied by his mistress. Nevertheless Truman stepped up to the job and dropped the "Bomb" not once but twice to end the War with Japan. He has been criticized in recent years by many of the radical anti-war leftists. However, there is no doubt that in doing so he saved hundreds of thousands if not millions of lives. The Japanese would have fought to the death until the Emperor told them to quit.

    And played the greatest hand of poker every played in the process. He told Japan if they did not surrender within three days, Tokyo was the next target. Hirohito surrendered. But Harry didn't have a third bomb in his back pocket. We'd only built three, and the first one was test fired in New Mexico.
    Amen, absolutely. Harry was the last president to hold the office that truly believed, as the sign on his desk said, "The buck stops here."

    If he was alive today, he'd be a Republican. But then, since his time, the parties have virtually traded philosophies.

    Had an older brother with the 32nd division through the Phillipine's Campaign. They were slated to be in the invasion of Mainland Japan but went in as an occupation force. He stayed one year in Japan before coming home. Only heard him speak of the war a couple of times but he knew the Japanese were fierce fighters and would have been more so defending the homeland. There is no doubt in my mind that every man who saw combat appreciated what Truman did.

    Now days we make heroes out of the likes of Hanoi Jane!

    The only President that I ever saw. My father despised him for stopping a railroad strike and donated to Ike in 1952. I like Ike.
