    Having said that, the results are not surprising to anyone well read in missiology and mission biographies. I could give examples from many lands about how missions have blessed societies in many ways, not just democracy, but consider Japan alone: the first modern medical clinic was started by Missionary Hepburn, the modern educational system was founded by missionaries, the agricultural system of Hokkaido (my island) was taught by a Christian layman, etc.

    A great book on how William Carey transformed India, in particular concerning the status of women, is The Legacy of William Carey: A Model for the Transformation of a Culture, by Vishal and Ruth Mangalwadi.
