I don't know the circumstances there. I don't know if someone went to them and asked them to change it up and they refused, or if they were trying to make a statement. Without knowing more detail, I can't condone the veteran's actions. Peaceful resolution should be sought first, and failing that, the action should be taken.

Maybe that's the way it played out, but we don't know. So I don't condemn the action, but neither do I condone it without more knowledge. With that being said, I'd have done the same thing IF they refused to change it.

Good point Sapper. The owner may be a US citizen who was unaware of etiquette - but it is assumed that he is disrespecting the nation. I attended a community event several years ago which was intended to honor military vets. The organizer misunderstood the “place of honor” and reversed the US and state flag. I recall another event where a company was buying several homes for servicemen injured in combat. The opening ceremony was almost right…but believe me, some ignored the intent and the several hundreds of thousands of dollars being given to help vets in order to protest the mistake (they had an awkward presentation of the colors due to the stage set up). I don’t know the circumstances here, and certainly the restaurant owner needed to be corrected - but sometimes it seems that we look to be offended.

Nothing definitive in any of the other stories on the Internet about this, but the bar owner apparently was told at least three times that he was displaying the U.S. flag illegally by placing another flag above it. He shrugged his shoulders and did nothing, according to the cameraman from KRNV who shot that video.

For the record, I've got no problem with it. It should have come down. Law enforcement was called about the flag and apparently stood around twiddling their thumbs and did nothing.

Putting a Mexican flag over top a US flag is far different than missing up state and US flags.

I’d have taken it down and given it to the owner with an explanation (unless, of course, it had been an ongoing issue - which seems to have been the case). Several times I’ve stopped by a business and asked them to take down a flag or replace it because it was worn out. Once it was actually at a HQ unit (they didn’t realize the flag had ripped, I guess).

It is amazing how many people either do not know or care to render proper respect for the nation. A high school football game is a vivid example. I once thought that people didn’t care…but I’m starting to realize that many simply don’t know what to do.
