    From the study

Demographics. A majority (69.3%) of those surveyed were between the age of 31 and 60. A significant number were female (69.5%).

    Also from the study

As to the role of church leadership, 44.6% Totally Agree or Agree that the Bible permits women to be pastors just like men (Q62).

24.9% totally agree or agree that living with a boy/girlfriend before marriage is acceptable (Q57)

I'm in that demographic (48 year old female) and my answers are

No - there is no acceptable time for an abortion

No - the earth is not millions of years old and Genesis is fact

No - I do not believe the Bible permits for women to be pastors

No - living with a boyfriend/girlfriend is NOT acceptable before marriage

These snap shots, regardless of agreement or disagreement, do provide an interesting view of the people making up our churches. Reveals a common disconnect between leadership and lay people in church work. Baptists are a diverse group of people and very rarely fit into any predefined box.

Very poorly designed poll! A total failure on the designers part.
This shouldn't be accepted as doctoral thesis project. There are just too many ways to interpret the answers.

First of all I don't "feel" anything about these things, I have beliefs, I have opinions.

Secondly, I hate the double negative questions - it makes the poll so hard to answer

Thirdly, much of it is a poll deals with literal biblicism rather than inerrancy.

    Examples:

There is no acceptable time for an abortion
Disagree - I believe abortion is an acceptable option when the life of the mother is in jeopardy

The earth is not millions of years old and Genesis is fact
Agree - the earth is billions of years old.

Living with a boyfriend/girlfriend is NOT acceptable before marriage
Much of the problem I have here concerns the idiom "living with". Disagree - there are times when an engaged a couple may be live in the same house prior to marriage.

Do you feel God, through Moses, changed the Nile river into blood?
Disagee, - I don't believe the Nile became "blood" as in corpuscles, platelets and plasma, I think it was a figure of speech, a simile, the Nile merely became blood-like.

    I'd probably fail this test.

I agree with those except that I don't think a rape victim should have to carry her rapist's baby to term if she doesn't want too--especially when the rape victim is a minor.

Also, if the doctors are positive that the woman won't survive if she carries a baby to term, abortion would save her life. Of course, I have mixed thoughts about that since I also believe that she should put her trust in the Lord. However, there are times that someone would die if not for the doctors.

Baptists are diverse people. We have always encouraged personal choices and validated respectable doctrinal differences. Our churches are full of different people.

Why does believing the earth is billions of years old challenge the facts presented in Genesis 1 - 11?

The reason is we have the list of people from Adam to Jesus, and if you add up the times given for some, and make reasonable estimates for generation times for the rest, we find that Adam was created less than 7 thousand years ago. Now since Adam was created on the sixth day of the reaction week, then assuming each creation day was 24 hours, we get the age of the Universe at less than 7 thousand years.

However, in Job 38 God tells us we do not know how God created everything, so to be dogmatic is simply unbiblical.

Why not stick with truth, i.e. based on assuming the days of creation are 24 hours long, then the earth is less than 7000 years old. That does not tarnish anyone's literal interpretation credentials.

I think once people recognize that abortion is homicide, then abortions would need to meet the "justifiable homicide" standard. Not wanting the baby or being depressed with the idea of having to raise the baby might be considered inadequate. Those of us who look to the bible for guidance on this matter would certainly not think those reasons justify the murder of helpless babies.
