Astronomical spring, which Ireland observes, started on February 1 :)

I don't know what they're celebrating, but it isn't astronomical spring. That starts at the Vernal Equinox, which isn't until March 20 this year.

Whoops, my bad. Thanks for catching it. Must be the flu. Not sure where that came from. Feb 1 is the first day of Celtic spring. (Sometimes called solar spring)

It's nice to have someone quick on the mark to correct my mistakes :)

Hm. I thought Celtic Spring was a band, and that solar spring was the same thing as astronomical spring, which is on the vernal equinox, which ... ah, fuhgeddaboudit!

It's meteorological spring. Meteorologists consider winter to be December/January/February. Spring is March/April May, summer is June/July/August and fall is September/October/November. It has nothing to do with the actual seasons but generally what they look at as the months of the most likely weather issues with each season.

Of course it will be the beginning of meteorological spring when we get a foot of snow on Monday! LOL

The vowel at the end of my paternal grandma's maiden name gives me carte blanche to use any such phrase that it enters my wee little mind to utter!  :wavey:

    Nope, not here either.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Minnesotans — you have a reason to complain.

According to the Winter Misery Index, a measuring stick developed by State Climatologist Pete Boulay, the Twin Cities are officially dealing with the worst winter in 30 years.

The index is based on a points formula that awards points based on cold, snowfall and snow depth. One point goes for each low temperature at or below zero and each high temperature 10 degrees or colder. There’s one point for a 1-inch snowfall gets, bonus points for snowfalls of four and eight inches. There’s also one point for every day that the snow depth is 12 inches or more.

As of Feb. 28, we are currently at 180 points. That’s the highest Misery Index since the winter of 1983-84.

“It’s highly likely we will top 222 points, which will put us in the ‘Very Severe’ category,” Boulay said. “There have been only six of those winters since 1900.”

Boulay said it’s possible, but unlikely this winter will top the all-time high of 305 points in 1916-17.

I think the robins have been listening to Al Gore too much, they were out by the bunches as the snow started melting out here - we seldom even have any. One now and then but we had close to a dozen the other day.

They said this was the worst winter since 1950 and I remember that winter, I was in the 3rd grade or so and -- this is true -- I remember pushing my way to school through drifts that were up to my chest! When I got there they sent me home - closed. So I played my whole way home :)
