quote from Matthew McConaughey at Oscar's (I don't know how accurate or verbatim).

"First off, I want to thank God because that's who I look up to. He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand, or any other human hand".

would post image but I give up posting an image in BB.:BangHead:

what do you think of his statement ?

Good for him. I hope the rest of his lifestyle reflects those comments. Those who are truly thankful are not just "fans" of God, they are "followers."

and at the risk of being labeled "grammar police", God is not a "that".

It could just be how he refers to others. Then again, it shows what Hollywood thinks of God--not as Someone, but as something.

Excessively nit-picky. He said "that's WHO" he looks up to. "That" is often used in reference to people, even God.

"That guy over there ... "
    "That's the guy they're looking for ... "
"That's the pastor I was telling you about ... "
"That is my God, who's yours?"

All valid uses of the word "that" regarding identifying who in particular you are speaking of.
Applaud the statement, don't nit-pick it and look for reasons why it might not be valid. The fact is, he is a Christian.
    Check this out.

Some folks are being overly picky for sure. It looks like he may be a very young Christian. There was a photo released of him reading "The Case for Christ". I think we can appreciate the fact that he appreciates where his talent comes from. Now let's see if that translates into better movies.

What do I think of his statement? Here the whole thing. Scroll down a little.

    http://www.thewire.com/entertainmen...y-gave-exactly-speech-youd-expect-him/358728/

I think it was his moment in a pagan and secular arena and he can say whatever he wants to say.

As far as his claiming that "God graced him" with the movie roles he plays - well, that's just a bunch of bull excrement.

God "graced him" with the opportunity to play Magic Mike? Really? Ironically, a man's movie about a group of men (who just happen to be strippers - but whom you never see stripping fully) initiating a younger man into the world of drugs, liquor, wanton sex with as many women as he chooses, and true vile behavior.

God "graced him" to play in The Wolf of Wall Street that contained 506 "f" words and at least 23 GRAPHIC sex scenes that caused the movie to initially get a "X" rating? (Not just graphic female nudity, but 23 scenes of graphic sex. (The one scene of male nudity was done with a prosthetic.)

I didn't see either one of these movies, but I have acquaintances who did. I just had to wonder - what's the pull?

So - I read the parent advisory on the IMDB for both and although I'm not shockable - I was sickened by the content of both of these films. The content on IMDB is clinically reported - no judgment, no warning, just a list of all things that a parent may not want their child to see.

I'm not shocked that Hollywood produces these films, but shocked that people I know would pay money to view them.

So Matthew believe God "graced him" with these opportunities?

Apparently many other Christians do to because all over Facebook is Christians hailing Matthew's name for mentioning God.

    I don't get it. :BangHead:

I was thankful to hear of the statement and understand the power of its humility.

Does the humility, the gratitude, or the "power" of the statement matter?

To me, what matters, is that McConaughey is dead wrong. God did NOT "grace" or gift him with the role of Magic Mike nor the role in The Wolf of Wall Street.

    Those were not God-given graces.

Ergo - there is no power in his statement.

I would really like someone to explain this to me because ALL I see on the net is Christians applauding him. What am I missing?

Yes it does matter if he is a baby Christian who just does not know any better.

Yes, but for the Christians in MY circle --- the BB, the BF, Facebook, and real-life ...

    ....they DO know better.

Wouldn't it be more prudent to say, "Hey, let's pray for this guy who has his priorities all mixed up and MIGHT be a baby Christian" instead of applauding him.

I think you are missing the point. Yes he got it wrong, but he is most likely a young Christian and did not know any better. He pubically gave God credit. That alone is worth some kudos. To just dismiss that is just odd.

Well, I'll just have to walk away being the odd man out. I've already prayed for him sincerely today. And I probably will again. It's burdening me.

But I cannot applaud him or his words.

But, But, But TND posted a link to beliefnet dot com that says its a fact he's a Christian. Who are you to judge that although his movies don't match up with a Christian worldview that he's not sincere??? :tonofbricks:

Scarlett you meany pants, I bet you don't even believe the Biebs is a true believer, I'm sure he was witnessing to those strippers and wasn't really drag racing, he was probably in a hurry to get to a bible study or the opening of a soup kitchen somewhere.

There's a whole lot of legalist pap on this board that is really beginning to bother me. What gives you the right to judge the state of another person's heart? Who told you that's your purview? What cause have you to judge words in the context of a secular news story about a new Christian? Must you nit-pick the public witness of such a man rather than rejoice that someone in Hollywood is praising God?

Let me answer for you: You have no such rights!!

Get off your high horses and concern yourself with your own walk.

Whoah, calm down, take a deep breath. I sure hate I missed the unedited version of your post. But its okay, no worries. Praise God, there is nothing me or any of the other "legalists" on this board can say that will unsave a saved person.

I understand, Scarlett. It IS confusing when good water and bad flows from the same fountain. When a professing Christian praises God in one breath, then walks hand in hand with the world, it DOES send mixed signals.

If he truly is a Christian, the Holy Spirit will guide him to make better life choices and good fruit will come out.

TND - I am not judging MM's salvation experience. I have no idea if whether he is a Christian or not. And his acceptance speech isn't evidence for or against it.

I AM judging his words. God did NOT drop the movie scripts to Magic Mike nor Wolf of Wall Street in his lap as "grace" and a "gift".

And I AM questioning all of the people on my Facebook page who keep proclaiming his great "spirituality". MM is being hailed across the internet as the greatest thing to Christianity since sliced bread merely because he mentioned God in a speech.

Nietzsche mentioned God, too, you know. Nietzsche's context was blasphemous. McConaughey's context was vulgar - giving God credit for vulgar movies and calling them a gift of "grace" in his life.

I don't care how much of a "tender-foot" he is. The Christians I see applauding him aren't. They know better.

No thanks. I'd rather stay and comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable.
