Jews in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk where pro-Russian militants have taken over government buildings were told they have to "register" with the Ukrainians who are trying to make the city become part of Russia, according to Israeli media.

Jews emerging from a synagogue say they were handed leaflets that ordered the city's Jews to provide a list of property they own and pay a registration fee "or else have their citizenship revoked, face deportation and see their assets confiscated," reported Ynet News, Israel's largest news website.

Donetsk is the site of an "anti-terrorist" operation by the Ukraine government, which has moved military columns into the region to force out militants who are demanding a referendum be held on joining Russia.

This news surely merits watching. I guess the first thing to be determined is who is passing them out.

It could very well be pro-Russians attempting to further destabilise the situation.

If this is indeed it government policy (on either side) things are getting scary.

I was tempted to think it was not real but just an attempt to make people mad. The problem is, what do they have to gain by picking the Jews out?

Kerry confirms report that Jews in Ukrainian city told to register

Secretary of State John Kerry confirmed Thursday a report that Jews in one restive Ukrainian city were sent notices telling them to register, a development he called "grotesque."

Kerry's comments follow a report in Israel's Ynet News that a leaflet was circulating in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, demanding that Jews register -- as well as provide a list of property they own -- or else face deportation and revocation of citizenship. Pro-Russian activists have asserted partial control over some government buildings in that city.

Ynet reported that the notices were signed by Denis Pushilin, chairman of Donetsk's temporary government -- though Ynet reports that Pushilin confirmed the flyers came from his organization, "but denied any connection to the leaflet's content."

The notices reportedly were sent to areas where pro-Russian activists have declared the region as a "people's republic" in defiance of the central Ukrainian government.

While questions circulated about the origin of the flyers, Ynet reported the flyers said that because Jewish community leaders supported a Ukrainian nationalist movement and "oppose the pro-Slavic People's Republic of Donetsk," the interim government has decided: "that all citizens of Jewish descent, over 16 years of age and residing within the republic's territory are required to report to the Commissioner for Nationalities in the Donetsk Regional Administration building and register."

The notices reportedly demand Jews pay a $50 registration fee.

..."They told me that masked men were waiting for Jewish people after the Passover eve prayer, handed them the flyer and told them to obey its instructions," he said.

The leaflet begins, "Dear Ukraine citizens of Jewish nationality," and states that all people of Jewish descent over 16 years old must report to the Commissioner for Nationalities in the Donetsk Regional Administration building and "register."

Reporters may be trying to nail down whether this is an actual government initiative, as the “temporary government” there denies it:

The leaflets bore the name of Denis Pushilin, who identified himself as chairman of "Donetsk's temporary government," and were distributed near the Donetsk synagogue and other areas, according to the report.

Pushilin acknowledged the flyers were distributed by his organization but he disavowed their content, according to the web site Jews of Kiev, Ynet reported.

Something just sounds a bit fishy here. Picking on Jews is a sure fire way to bring up holocaust images and add to the instability and fears.

Would the Ukrainian government be stupid enough to have done this? Or was it Russians trying to further fan the flames of anti-Ukraine emotions.

I guess we'll see as time goes by.

Just read a few more reports. Very confusing. The only group who looks bad, if they are real, are the separatists. This is one mixed up region, all the more reason to stay out.

It just seems like such a neo nazi thing to do. Registering the Jews.

Smells like a false flag operation to me. To bad our corporate media is so bent on feeding us propaganda instead of truth about what's going on in Ukraine.

I was not attempting to "derail this thread". Who made you the judge of such things anyway?

You want to see what real attempts to derail a thread looks like? To bad I'm going to show you anyway!

    http://www.baptistboard.com/showthread.php?t=93004

This is what attempts to derail a thread looks like. I'm about tired of you and your little hypocrite buddies acting like you have some kind of god given authority to police these forums to your standards. And you complain about the democrats trying to silence opposing views. You are no different than them.

When is something going to be done about these hypocrites Roger? Why are they allowed to poison these threads with their hypocrisy all the time while the mods sit by and watch?

Is this a Christian board or a hypocrite board?

I think the BB motto ought to be change from "the truth will set you free" to "the truth is the last thing we want to hear".

Disturbing to say the least, regardless if this turns out to be government sponsored or not.
