Some folks are complaining that the presidency of Barak Hussein Obama is a failed presidency. I strongly disagree. Obama’s campaign slogan repeated ad nauseam was “Hope and Change”. His campaign promise was to “Significantly Transform America”. It is my opinion that he has succeeded in fulfilling his campaign promise more than any president in history, certainly beyond his wildest dreams. Of course he had some help, primarily Harry Reid, Senate Majority leader.

We live in a time when most of the "greatest generation" have already died and those remaining are quickly passing away. Sadly the nation for which this generation sacrificed so very much is also passing away, the consequence of the Obama presidency. Obama has in 5 short years destroyed the greatest nation in history, converting it into a third world country, a banana republic.

I realize there are several Obama lovers on this Forum. I will refrain from identifying them but I must assume they are well pleased.

    Your candidate lost.....

It's time to move on  enough with the complaints and denigrating comments!

I thought I'd beat those Obama lovers, YOU SO RIGHTFULLY MENTIONED, to the punch, this way you can be better prepared for the attacks, and the race card being tossed in your direction...

To set the records straight - I THOROUGHLY AGREE WITH YOUR PERSPCETIVES!

I agree also and that is why I say that he is the greatest Democrat ever.

I have been having internet problems in accessing this site. Then, when I finally am able to get here I can't quote. Nevertheless...

O.R. you're not advancing a new idea. It has been common knowledge for quite some time that Obama has been very successful in implementing his objectives. Back in 2011 Rush said:"He's succeeded profoundly. He has done exactly what he intended to do...It's shocking the damage that's been done to this country in three years."

In Jan. of this year Rush has said:"Obama has succeeded on all fronts in transforming America..."

CMG: I beg to differ with you. I seriously doubt that Harry Truman or even John F. Kennedy would have been sympathetic with any of the policies and goals of the Obama administration. They were Democrats, but of an entirely different order than Obama's breed. F.D.R. might have applauded some, or many of Obama's plans -- he would have been the exception. No, I think it's unfair to say that Obama is the greatest Democrat. The President is aligned with the Democratic party of modern times --but most Democratic leaders in American history would certainly object with the way in which the President has "managed" his office. That thesis won't fly.

Well we do need some significant change.

So do you think Obama changed the country more than Abraham Lincoln who abolished slavery, FDR who greatly expanded the role of government in American life, and Lyndon B. Johnson who enacted civil rights legislation?

The same Senate majority leader who won't get just get rid of the procedural filibuster?

Funny you should mention the Greatest Generation. They indeed deserve the epithet of "Greatest" for sacrificing greatly and building a far stronger, prosperous, and better nation than the one they were born into. However, the question arises: for what did they sacrifice and what did they achieve as a result? The answer can broadly speaking be found in the two great ideas of President Franklin D. Roosevelt-the Four Freedoms and the Second Bill of Rights. Freedom of Worship. Freedom of Speech. Freedom From Fear. Freedom From Want. The right of every American to a decent job, shelter, health care, and security from poverty.

And despite the innumerable challenges, the Greatest Generation made great strides in achieving this promise both within the United States and throughout the world. They defeated the armies of Nazi Germany and fascist Japan, bleeding and dying in the North Africa sands, on the beaches of Normandy, the wintry woods of the Ardennes, and the tropical hells of Tarawa and Guadacanal. When the war ended, these veterans were determined to ensure the horrible events of the past would not be repeated. To ensure there would never again be the horrors of global warfare, the United Nations was created to foster international cooperation. When it became evident that the Soviet Union would prove another threat to free peoples, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created and containment strategy implemented to prevent the spread of this breed of authoritarianism. Meanwhile they returned home to build a broad-based middle-class society where no American would again experience the deprivation and destitution of the Great Depression. To achieve this they recognized that there would have to be a broad safety net and that the inevitable concentration of wealth and power in a small minority would not be conducive to the nation's well-being. As a result successive administrations of both Democratic and Republican Presidents would preside over the greatest economic boom in American history accompanied by the "Great Compression" where income inequality was vastly reduced from the extremely unequal conditions that prevailed in pre-Depression America and where working-class Americans would enjoy wages, benefits, and consumer goods that were unparalleled with many of these benefits having been won by the powerful and politically active labour unions. This was the great ideal: the "New Deal", the "Fair Deal", the "New Frontier", the "Great Society". On the governmental side, the implementation of this vision meant the implementation of programs that would provide a measure of stability and security for Americans: Social Security, the minimum wage, regulation of the banks, Medicare, Medicaid. Unfortunately despite the best efforts of several Presidents of both parties, the cornerstone of the American social market was not laid-namely universal health care.

Meanwhile the Greatest Generation also became aware of the fact that the ideals of the Declaration of Independence-that all men are created equal-and de jure enshrined in the 13th through 15th Amendments to the Constitution had not been fulfilled in reality. For that reason, the Presidents and Congressmen elected by the men and women of that generation, and the judges whom these politicians appointed began to strike the blows for true equality. Starting with the banning of discrimination for federal contracts and the desegregation of the armed forces this would involve the desegregation of schools and other public facilities, the ending of discrimination by private businesses, and the enforcement of voting rights.

Having been largely exiled from the mainstream of American politics for a generation, certain arch-conservatives searched for an opening through which their ideas based on laissez-faire economics might become mainstream once more. They discovered such an opening in the resentment of many white Southerners at civil rights legislation and also saw that for several generations, reactionary politicians in the South had exploited white Southern fears of the black race to discourage the formation of a populist alliance that would dethrone the Southern oligarchy. Thus happened the implemenation of the Southern Strategy.

The first instance of this occurred in 1964, when Barry Goldwater who had been one of the few Senators to oppose the Civil Rights Act had become the Republican nominee for President. The states of the Deep South whose white voters had been overwhelmingly Democratic for a century went by equally large margins for Goldwater instead of their fellow Southerner Lyndon B. Johnson. However Johnson triumphed throughout the rest of the country, ensuing his victory. The perfection of this strategy would have to wait four years for the American Machiavelli, Richard Nixon. Using coded words of "law and order" and the "silent majority", Nixon triumphed over Hubert H. Humphrey. the last true New Deal Democrat and began the long dominance of the far right in American politics. Successive Republican administrations would perfect this strategy of appealing to white middle-class and working-class resentment as evidenced by Ronald Reagan's great electoral triumphs. One notes that Reagan called for "states' rights", campaigned alongside segregationist Democrat turned Republican Strom Thurmond, and even gave a speech on the above-mentioned topic at Philadelphia, Mississippi where three civil rights workers had been murdered. The Republicans were aided in this by growing concerns among many conservative Christians over the increasing looseness of morals and the legalization of abortion nationwide due to Roe v. Wade (incidentally this decision was welcomed by many evangelical Christians including W.A. Criswell of Dallas until the Catholic Church and Francis Schaeffer pushed back against this trend).

This does not excuse the Democrats in their role in the failure of the triumph of President Roosevelt's vision. After the 1968 defeat of Hubert H. Humphrey, New Leftist forces seized control of the Democratic Party ensuing the nomination of George McGovern in 1972. This triumph brought the current obsessive and myopic focus on a handful of controversial social issues such as abortion which would further alienate the white working-class elements of the party. The utter defeat of McGovern would in turn result in a rightward shift of the Democratic Party on economic issues resulting in the nomination of candidates such as Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama.

Meanwhile the right-wing became more and more entrenched in American politics under the Reagan administration. Taxes were cut to the benefit of wealthy Americans despite ballooning deficits as were social welfare spending. For the first in a generation, income inequality began to increase in the United States and would grow worse and worse over the next thirty years until now when this disparity is the greatest it has been in one hundred years and the worst in the industrialized world. Financial regulations were deregulated, with the Glass-Steagall act being repealed by a conservative Democratic President. The only bright spot was the end of the Cold War with the collapse of the Communist bloc, ending the long struggle against that breed of totalitarianism.

    (continued from previous post):

The Republican capture of both houses of Congress in 1994 would inaugurate the dreary saga of endless war and sabotage against President Clinton, which of course included the blocking of a universal health care bill. The subsequent electoral victories of George W. Bush seemed to finally confirm the complete triumph of the right-wing in American politics, with Republican majorities guaranteed after the 9-11 terrorist attacks. At last, the ideals of the New Deal that the Greatest Generation had fought for at home and abroad had been mastered-or so it seemed. Not content with merely crippling any further expansion of the social safety net, President Bush proposed the privatization of Social Security. Yet this would prove a bridge too far for the New Right which were further hurt by the disastrous and unnecessary war in Iraq and Hurricane Katrina.

Steadily, the progressive impulse of the American people reasserted itself. The efforts of the Greatest Generation were not to be forgotten-the bold vision of the man who had reassured Americans in a world seemingly lost in depression, dictatorship, and war that the only thing one had to fear was fear itself. The collapse of the financial markets in 2008 proved that a deregulated economy would result in economic collapse while the devastating impact of austerity measures similarly showed that in a recession demand had to be boosted by government spending if necessary. Americans began to see that the great gains achieved in the aftermath of the Second World War were being eroded-by many indicators Americans were now some of the worst-off people in the industrialized world. With regards to life expectancy, infant mortality rates, health-care costs, vacation time, labour union participation, class mobility, and crime rates America was close to if not at the bottom among the developed countries.

In the last few years, liberals and progressives have pushed the ever-cautious Obama administration to implement some desperately needed measures. A modest stimulus package prevented further economic collapse, while the Affordable Care Act attempted to plug in the last great, gaping hole in the American social welfare state and rein in the enormous costs of health care while ensuing access to millions of Americans who did not have the protection of health insurance.

This then was the story of the ideals of the Greatest Generation and its betrayal, a generation which consistently voting for the Democratic Party throughout their lifetime, ensuing that the Democratic Party would control the House for forty years from 1954 to 1994. The majority of them would not agree with the agenda of the radically reactionary Tea Party which now has hijacked the Republican Party. You have absolutely no right to claim them as your own.

I'm sure that's why incomes have been halved, the US dollar is worthless, and a third of Americans are unemployed.

But this raises a good question: who are the ones who are trying their best to turn the United States into a banana republic? Is it the party that supports expanded access to health insurance or opposes it and goes even by further by calling for the voucherization of Medicare and the gutting of Medicaid? Is it the party that supports a higher minimum wage or the one that opposes raising it and even proposes to get rid of it? Is it the party that is trying to do something to ameliorate rising income inequality or the party that considers it a good thing? Is it the party that wants to fix and improve our infrastructure or the party that demands we cut spending on the infrastructure? Is it the party that tries what it can to reduce the influence of wealthy donors in setting the political agenda through campaign financing or the party that wishes to abolish restraints on campaign financing?

Actually I'm not. Obama has been far too centrist, moderate, conciliatory, lacking in vision, and tied to the neoliberal/social liberal paradigm that the Democratic Party has had for the last generation. Consider for example the essentially conservative nature of the Affordable Care Act, extensively incorporating ideas Governor Romney's health care plan in Massachusetts and the Heritage Foundation without any serious attempt to push for lower drug prices. The President, additionally, has been constantly sending overtures for a "Grand Bargain" that would had imposed harsh austerity measures in a weak economy but most fortunately the stubborn resistance of the Tea Party fanatics in the Republican caucus prevented this. There is, of course, also the matter of Obama easily declaring his willingness to have a chained CPI and pushing for a stimulus bill that was smaller than was needed and consisted by and large of tax cuts.

I suggest you watch this speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9yoZHs6PsU and then compare it to the positively Laodicean rhetoric of President Obama.

Perhaps because people were tired of a pointless war in Iraq? Perhaps because there was an economic crisis that was the worst since the Great Depression? But no, let's just chalk it up to blacks voting for Obama cause he was black.

Most blacks did in fact vote for him because of the color of his skin. They didn't care what his policies were. He was a brother and they were going to stand with him because he was a brother --no other reason needed to be advanced. Most could not have told you Obama's political stances were if their lives depended upon it. I know all of what I have said is so terribly unPC --but it's the truth.

    Is the General implying' ......

..... that the man in the WH is trying to make us a "Third-world country?" world country?" If this is the fact, then those coming over the border like a human tsunami, will really find themselves at home here, it won't be much different than what they are leaving behind, except, the wages will be much better, and far more advantage to send home to their loved ones, while "Once" hard-working Americans sit back and collect welfare, because there are no longer well-paying jobs!

Is this what you are implying General? If so, I agree 100%, and I look to the future with great sadness in my heart.

And that ain't a changin' anytime soon!

I have a lot of very good black friends, and the only differences we have are political in nature! However, some have begun to see the error in their votes, but can't change it! But they tell me the majority of blacks they know, would vote Obama in for a third term if they could, because they don't want a white or maybe a first time for a Hispanic ,o rule the country again, or for as long as they can delay it!

Great view Rippon; unPC or not, we must never be afreaid to speak the truth!
