What a strange reaction to the sanctions the West put on Russia.

Russia bans food imports from U.S. and European nations.
MOSCOW — Russia on Thursday banned all imports of meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and milk products from the United States, the European Union and several other countries that have hit it with sanctions over the conflict in Ukraine, dealing a multibillion-dollar hit to those nations but also unreeling wide-ranging consequences at home.

At home in Russia, the food measures promised to hit not only city centers, where the urban middle class has grown accustomed to visiting supermarkets overflowing with high-quality imported European cheeses, fish and sausages. Analysts warned that food prices would increase and that a wide range of Russian industries, including food processing plants, shippers and retailers, would be affected.

Russian imports of U.S. agricultural products total about $1 billion a year. From the E.U., the figure was $15.8 billion in 2013. Imports include grains and other raw products that feed Russia’s 144 million residents.

The ban will not return Russian grocery stores to Soviet-era inventory levels — food from Asia, Turkey and South America will keep flowing — but it did appear to deal a major blow to 23 years of gains and Westernization in the consumer market since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Russia is highly dependent on imports for much of its food, and analysts said the restrictions are likely to drive up food prices in the country.

[BTW, the U.S. exports $1.2B dollars worth of food to Russia. This represents about 1.0% of all U.S. food exports, meaning we won't be affected much, if at all.]

I agree. Yes it will hurt some companies a bit, but it will hurt the Russian people more in shortages and increased prices. I may be wrong but I am beginning to believe Putin has painted himself into a corner and is winging it as events unfold. Yes, he wants to recreate the Russian empire. However, I do not believe he anticipated the consequences of his actions. This may make him even more dangerous to world peace.

    Hmmmm?

This will take a serious bite of Americas fast food chains in Russia. No meat and veggies for a Big Mac? No chicken for the Colonel? No meat and cheese for Pizza Hut?

Seems to me that Russia will gladly cut off their nose to spite their face. It is not only going to put a run on food, leading to hungry Russians, it wil put many young Russians in an unemployment line.

Don't see what good this will do for Russia, and in fact, once the hard truths set in, Putins polls may begin to slide!

However, I tend to think Putin, Iran and even China are lining up according to Ez. 38. With everything that's happening, we are moving strangely, towards a conflict that may bring war to the world's stage! All we need to do whe this happens is wait and see who ushers in a few years of peace?

Russian McDonald's and Pizza Hut restaurants get their ingredients from Russian suppliers, not from the U.S. It will have zero effect on them. Not sure about KFC but I assume it is the same.

I'm pretty sure the cost of the buns will skyrocket.

The Russians have been hardened by more adversity than we Americans can comprehend. A little food embargo isn't going to turn them against their leader.

First BRICS Bank, Now BRICS Food Bank

Despite President Obama's dictating that Russia is increasingly "isolated," it appears they have found a whole new set of friends to play with in the global trade sandpit. In retaliation to Western sanctions, Putin yesterday unveiled a total food import ban from all sanctioning nations, and, just as the BRICS created their own 'IMF-lite' away from Washington's prying eyes, Russia plans to substitute banned goods with not just domestic supplies but imports from Latin America, China, and several other nations. Agriculture Minister Nikolai Fedorov said "no food shortages are expected," but more isolation for the West...

    Way to go team.

Washington DC to Russia. "You do what we say or else we'll . . ." Russian reply to Washington's threats, "whatever".
