    How Great Thou Art

    O Lord my God, I stand and gaze in wonder
    on the vast heavens Thy wisdom hath ordained;
    sun, moon and stars continue at Thy pleasure,
    from nothing called and by Thy power sustained.

    O mighty God, my heart cries out to Thee:
    How great Thou art! how great Thou art!
    Thy praise shall sound throughout eternity:
    How great Thou art! how great Thou art!

    2. Sometimes I hear the heavens rent by thunder,
    or see dread lightning leap across the sky,
    then in the cloud I see the promised rainbow
    stilling my fears with mercy from on high.

    3. This earth once heard the sound of angels singing --
    this earth that wept the day that Adam fell --
    for Jesus came from purest heights of glory,
    an infant weak, to break the powers of hell.

    4. Nailed to a tree, the great Creator suffered
    when the dread weight of foulest sin He bare.
    Lo! Satan flees! the Lord of glory triumphs!
    Nothing can with this mighty love compare.

    Eluned Harrison, b. 1934; based on Carl Gustaf Boberg, 1856-1940.

    Glory, Glory Everlasting

    Glory, glory everlasting
    be to Him who bore the cross!
    who redeemed our souls, by tasting
    death, the death deserved by us:
    spread His glory
    spread His glory
    who redeemed His people thus.

    2 His is love, 'tis love unbounded,
    without measure, without end;
    human thought is here confounded,
    'tis too vast to comprehend:
    praise the Saviour!
    praise the Saviour!
    magnify the sinner's friend.

    3 While we hear the wonderous story
    of the Saviour's cross and shame,
    sing we, 'Everlasting glory
    be to God, and to the Lamb!'
    Saints and angels,
    Saints and angels,
    glory give to his great name!

    Thomas Kelly, 1769-1855

    This is one of my favorites:

    O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
    Consider all the *worlds thy hands have made,
    I see the stars, I hear the *rolling thunder,
    Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

    Refrain

    Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
    How great thou art! How great thou art!
    Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
    How great thou art! How great thou art!

    When through the woods and forest glades I wander
    And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
    When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
    And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

    Refrain

    And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
    Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
    That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
    He bled and died to take away my sin.

    Refrain

    When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
    And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
    Then *I shall bow in humble adoration,
    And there proclaim, My God, how great thou art!"

    But, alas, it is set to the tune of Swedish folk melody and therefore taboo for some of our brethern (secular...ya know). :smilewinkgrin:

    Jon C : You do realize that in my op I gave a more authetic rendering of the original. I am curious why you didn't mention it.

    Yes, I do. It is one of my favorite hymns, I didn't mention it because I thought your post spoke for itself. It's a wonderful song. I gave this version only because it is how I know the hymn.

    How Happy Every Child of Grace....by Charles Wesley

    That's right. Charles Wesley, the Ar....errr....never mind...here are the lyrics.

    How happy every child of grace,
    Who knows his sins forgiven!
    “This earth,” he cries, “is not my place,
    I seek my place in Heaven—
    A country far from mortal sight,
    Which yet by faith I see,
    The land of rest, the saints’ delight,
    The heaven prepared for me.”

    O what a blessèd hope is ours!
    While here on earth we stay,
    We more than taste the heavenly powers,
    And antedate that day.
    We feel the resurrection near,
    Our life in Christ concealed,
    And with His glorious presence here
    Our earthen vessels filled.

    O would He more of heaven bestow,
    And let the vessels break,
    And let our ransomed spirits go
    To grasp the God we seek;
    In rapturous awe on Him to gaze,
    Who bought the sight for me;
    And shout and wonder at His grace
    Through all eternity!

    Leave God to Order all Thy Ways

    Leave God to order all thy ways,
    and hope in Him whate'er betide;
    thou'lt find Him in the evil days
    thy all-sufficient strength and guide:
    who trusts in God's unchanging love
    builds on the rock that nought can move.

    Only thy restless heart keep still,
    and wait in cheerful hope, content
    to take whate'er His gracious will,
    His all-discerning love, hath sent;
    nor doubt our inmost wants are known
    to Him who chose us for his own.

    Sing, pray, and swerve not from His ways,
    but do thine own part faithfully;
    trust His rich promises of grace,
    so shall they be fulfilled in thee:
    God never yet forsook at need
    the soul that trusted Him indeed.

    Georg Christian Neumark, 1621-81;
    Tr. by Catherine winkworth, 1827-78

    My God, how wonderful Thou art,
    Thy majesty, how bright;
    How beautiful Thy mercy seat
    In depths of burning light!

    How dread are Thy eternal years,
    O everlasting Lord,
    By prostrate spirits day and night
    Incessantly adored!

    How wonderful, how beautiful,
    The sight of Thee must be;
    Thy endless wisdom, boundless power,
    And glorious purity!

    O how I fear Thee, living God,
    With deep and tender fear;
    And worship Thee with trembling hope,
    And penitential tears!

    Yet, I may love Thee, too, O Lord,
    Almighty as Thou art;
    For Thou hast stooped to ask of me
    The love of my poor heart!

    No earthly father loves like Thee,
    No mother, e’er so mild,
    Bears and forbears as Thou hast done,
    With me, Thy sinful child.

    Father of Jesus, love’s Reward!
    What rapture it will be
    Prostrate before Thy throne to lie,
    And gaze, and gaze on Thee!

    Now Let Our Hearts Unite (Joseph Irons 1758-1852)

    Now let our hearts unite
    To praise the Saviour's name;
    Let ransomed souls delight
    His triumph to proclaim,
    Till heaven and earth shall hear our songs:
    Salvation to our God belongs.

    He gave for us His Son
    In everlasting love;
    And lo, our Lord came down
    His faithfulness to prove;
    Obeyed and suffered, died and rose
    In triumph over all our foes.

    Now He's exalted high,
    and from yon glorious throne
    He hears His people cry,
    And claims them as His own;
    He bears them all upon His breast;
    In Him we are completely blest.

    For ever justified
    By His atoning blood,
    We shall be glorified
    In presence of our God;
    Ere long we shall our Saviour see,
    For where He is His saints must be.

    Depth of Mercy

    Depth of mercy! Can there be
    mercy still reserved for me?
    Can my God his wrath forbear,
    me, the chief of sinners, spare?

    I have long withstood his grace,
    long provoked him to his face,
    would not hearken to his calls,
    grieved him by a thousand falls.

    I my Master have denied,
    I afresh have crucified,
    oft profaned his hallowed name,
    put him to an open shame.

    There for me the Savior stands,
    shows his wounds and spreads his hands.
    God is love! I know, I feel;
    Jesus weeps and loves me still.

    Now incline me to repent,
    let me now my sins lament,
    now my foul revolt deplore,
    weep, believe, and sin no more.

    Charles Wesley (1740)

    I want the authors of the hymns to be identified and given credit --even Mr. Anon. on occasion.

    God Alone Shall the Refuge Be

    God shall alone the refuge be
    And comfort of my mind;
    Too wise to be mistaken, He,
    Too good to be unkind.

    In all His holy, sovereign will,
    He is, I daily find,
    Too wise to be mistaken still,
    Too good to be unkind.

    When I the tempter's rage endure,
    'Tis God supports my mind;
    Too wise to be mistaken, sure!
    Too good to be unkind.

    Though I cannot His goings see,
    Nor all His footsteps find;
    Too wise to be mistaken, He,
    Too good to be unkind.

    Hereafter He will make me know
    And I shall surely find,
    He was too wise to err, and O
    Too good to be unkind!

    Samuel Medley, 1738-99.

    "Revelation Song"

    Worthy is the,
    Lamb who was slain
    Holy, Holy, is He
    Sing a new song, to Him who sits on
    Heaven's Mercy Seat

    Holy, Holy, Holy
    Is the Lord God Almighty
    Who was, and is, and is to come
    With all creation I sing:
    Praise to the King of Kings!
    You are my everything,
    And I will adore You…!
    Yeah!

    Clothed in rainbows, of living color
    Flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder
    Blessing and honor, strength and
    Glory and power be
    To You the Only Wise King,
    Yeah

    Filled with wonder,
    Awestruck wonder
    At the mention of Your Name
    Jesus, Your Name is Power
    Breath, and Living Water
    Such a marvelous mystery
    Yeah...

    Holy, Holy, Holy
    Is the Lord God Almighty
    Who was, and is, and is to come,
    With all creation I sing:
    Praise to the King of Kings!
    You are my everything,
    And – I - will - adore YOU…

    Come up lift up His Name
    To the King of Kings…
    We will adore YOU Lord…
    King of heaven and earth
    King Jesus, King Jesus
    Aleluya, aleluya, aleluya!
    Majesty, awestruck Honor
    And Power and Strength and Dominion
    To You Lord,
    To the King, to King
    To the King of Glory

    The US Navy Hymn

    ETERNAL FATHER, STRONG TO SAVE....
    Words by William Whiting, 1860...
    Music by John B. Dykes, 1861

    Eternal Father, strong to save,
    Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
    Who biddest the mighty ocean deep
    Its own appointed limits keep;
    Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
    For those in peril on the sea!

    O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
    And hushed their raging at Thy Word,
    Who walked on the foaming deep,
    And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
    Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
    For those in peril on the sea!

    Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood
    Upon the chaos dark and rude,
    And bid its angry tumult cease,
    And give, for wild confusion, peace;
    Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
    For those in peril on the sea!

    O Trinity of love and power!
    Our family shield in danger’s hour;
    From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
    Protect us wheresoever we go;
    Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
    Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

    All creatures of our God and King

    All creatures of our God and King
    Lift up your voice and with us sing,
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    Thou burning sun with golden beam,
    Thou silver moon with softer gleam!

    Refrain

    O praise Him! O praise Him!
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

    Thou rushing wind that art so strong
    Ye clouds that sail in Heaven along,
    O praise Him! Alleluia!
    Thou rising moon, in praise rejoice,
    Ye lights of evening, find a voice!

    Refrain

    Let all things their Creator bless,
    And worship Him in humbleness,
    O praise Him! Alleluia!
    Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
    And praise the Spirit, Three in One!

    Refrain

    Francis of Assisi, circa 1225. Translated to English by William H. Draper.

    Immovable Our Hope Remains

    VERSE 1
    Immovable our hope remains
    Though shifting sands before us lie
    The One who washed away our stains
    Shall bear us safely to the skies
    The floods may rise, the winds may beat
    Torrential rains descend
    Yet God His own will not forget
    He’ll love and keep us till the end
    You’ll love and keep us till the end

    VERSE 2
    This is eternal life: to know
    The living God and Christ, the Son
    The Savior will not let us go
    Until His saving work is done
    Our debt was great, as was our need
    But now the price is paid
    Who can behold Immanuel bleed
    And doubt His willingness to save?
    We trust Your willingness to save

    VERSE 3
    The Lord acquits, who can condemn?
    Though Satan’s accusations fly
    His pow’r can never reach our names
    To blot them from the Book of Life
    The Son has surely made us free
    His Word forever stands
    And all our joy is knowing we
    Are graven on His wounded hands
    We’re graven on Your wounded hands

    VERSE 4
    Built into Christ, secure we stand
    For with His Spirit we’ve been sealed
    By grace we’ll see the promised land
    Where every sorrow shall be healed
    To God who gave His only Son
    To Jesus Christ, our Lord
    To God the Spirit, Three-in-one
    Be songs of praise forevermore
    We’ll sing Your praise forevermore

    Original words by Augustus Toplady (1812), music and alternate words by Bob Kauflin and Brittany Kauflin (Sovereign Grace Music)

    Verses 2-4 are different, and far, far superior, to what I've seen in the hymnals where I've found this hymn. Those I've seen have 3 verses, with 2 and 3 addressing travelers by land and by air. Love the doctrine in what you've posted (and love the harmonies in Mr. Dykes' tune.)
