One visited church tonight and made it clear what she is and where she has been called. After the service I got into a friendly chat in gentleness and respect and she said she wants to talk further with me and I agreed to friendly debate in gentleness and respect. I am aware of all the scripture arguments for the biblical role of man and woman but I may need additional books to formulate arguments when we engage in debate soon. I have a John MacArthur book on this topic but are there better ones out there? Thanks..

Until you know the scriptures for yourself, you're not in any position to debate the issue.

I'm not advocating a position, just being honest. If all your arguments are framed by a human author, then you're simply going to regurgitate his lines. That means you'll have no answer if she makes an argument which was not addressed in the book.

Own your view from scripture before you jump into a debate

I think it's pretty clear when the bible says for woman to keep silence in the churches and not to usurp authority over the man, also the bible says a bishop is to be the HUSBAND of one wife.

John, could I talk you into putting the books away, and just pray and study the Scriptures without outside influence?

What's the stance of your church leadership? If the church you attend has a problem with this, then the leadership should address...not you. If the church is OK with it, then you should not enter into any debate with her about it.

    Amen!!

    1 Tim 2-3
    1 Cor 14

Many other places as well. The Bible is quite clear on this one.

What if the leadership does not address it? Does that mean I should be silent? Of coarse I should and I will for I have learned from the Bereans.

If the leadership doesn't address it then you have weak leadership and you should work to change the leadership or find another church.

Actually, I think a better translation would be something like, don't make a lot of noise in church during the service. Don't forget, Corinth was a pretty dysfunctional church

Yes, this is a result of the fall.

This would better be translated "a one-woman kind of man." In Ephesus (where Timothy was pastoring at the time) it was common practice for men (even married men) to spend a bit of time (frequently, according to some scholars) at the temple of Diana (with the temple prostitutes). So, it was not uncommon (especially for the unsaved) to be men with many women. Paul was playing on a euphemism of the time (one man kind of woman - the type you take home to mom) to emphasize the monogamous nature of a Christian marriage. So, it really can't be used as a text proving women can't be leaders (since they can't have "one wife").

Also, 1 Tim 3:11 could be translated as the woman (not wife) has to have certain standards. In other words, you could look at 1 Tim 3:8-10, 12 as the requirements for a deacon. And look at 1 Tim 3:11 as the requirements of a deaconess.

Yes, John, I did read your post. I still think you should avoid what other men wrote and depend on the Bible and the brain that God gave you.

I caught that, yet I think you forgot about your next word....""BUT..."

If you know the scriptural arguments, then why would you need some more books to formulate an argument?

I remember reading somewhere.... "think not what you will say at that time, for it will be given by the Holy Spirit what you should say"

I don't remember reading anywhere that Mac will give you the words to say

Then why should I listen to you? You were trying to get me hooked on your book, this everyday evangelism, and your personal advice.

I am not advocating women in the ministry, but I don't think women not being preachers was what these passages addressed. I've read where the assembly gathered, the men sat on one side, and the women the other side. If she was to ask her husband at church, she would have to either ask across the church or get up and walk over and ask her husband. That's why they weren't permitted to speak in church. It would have disturbed the service. They were to ask their husbands later on, iow.

I agree that 1 Tim. 3 and Titus 1 lays out the requirements of who were to preach...
