Civil War officer to receive Medal of Honor

WASHINGTON (AP) — A century and a half after his valiant death in the Battle of Gettysburg, a Union Army officer is being awarded the nation's highest military decoration, thanks to a decades-long campaign by his descendants and Civil War buffs.

The White House announced Tuesday that President Barack Obama approved the Medal of Honor for 1st Lt. Alonzo H. Cushing, who was killed standing his ground against Pickett's Charge during the pivotal, three-day Battle of Gettysburg.

Carpro, do you believe this is a good or bad award?

Very well could be well deserved, but I tend to agree with Sen. Webb. Records are notoriously sketchy from that time period and family correspondence cannot be fully trusted.

As I've read, one reason for the MH not to be awarded in a more timely manner is at the time of the LT's actions the MH was not awarded posthumously.

Call me cynical, but I wonder what part WH politics (re race relations) plays in this.

It looked to me like it was more of a massive lobbying effort by a well connected family.

You are probably right. Either way...politics.

Rereading this, I think that I should clarify. Race relations: think Black President trying to ease white racial tensions while the riots in Missouri are fresh in the mind.

It would be in line with his prior seemingly tone deaf actions. Remember Missouri is a border state where slavery was legal back in the day. The officer being awarded the MH was a Union officer. Hard to make points with the land of Quantrill.
