In a major setback for al-Qaeda’s affiliate in East Africa, the Obama administration said Friday it had confirmed the death of a key Somali militant leader who had been targeted in an airstrike earlier in the week.

The White House and Pentagon released statements asserting U.S. responsibility for killing Ahmed Abdi Godane, the leader of al-Shabab, a Somali jihadist movement that has become an increasing threat to neighboring countries, including Kenya and Uganda. Godane had bragged of masterminding an audacious assault by gunmen on a Nairobi shopping mall last year, killing dozens while keeping local security forces at bay for days.

After receiving intelligence on the elusive Godane’s whereabouts, the U.S. military sent drones and other aircraft on Monday to an al-Shabab camp near the southern port of Barawe. They unloaded several Hellfire missiles and other munitions, flattening the camp and destroying a nearby vehicle. But with no U.S. troops on the ground to pick through the wreckage, Godane’s fate was not immediately clear.

The Pentagon did not reveal in its statement how it was able to confirm Godane’s death.

FINALLY! He did the job for which he was elected. Of course, it was done between fund raisers. Nothing brings a smile to my face like news that we have killed Somali Muslim terrorists. And I'm serious about that.

Well you know we have also been steadily bombing ISIS in Iraq for almost a month now.

    Good point ....

See, I knew you had it in you to make good points. Keep it up! :applause: Of course, a few sorties a day does not equate to bombing them back into the stone age. But it is better than what Obeyme did when Benghazi needed at least a fly over from even one jet! :BangHead: My heart goes out to the families of those killed, and the survivors. I put myself in their place, and only keep thinking, as they did, I know help will be here soon; that is the American way! You know, when the bugle sounds "Charge!" and the men in blue on horseback come riding to our rescue, guns a blazing, swords a flying!

Nevertheless, that never happened, and I can't imagine how let down these guys must have felt. Maybe even somewhat, "Betrayed!" Because not sending hep, is so not like America! After all, we not only not leave a man beind, we always did our best to save those under fire!

Well it isn't exactly the first time I've mentioned this. I don't think we are trying to bomb them back to the stone age. There are still some people who have to live there you know. We just spent about a decade rebuilding the place.

That is true. And I apologize, because I didn't mean that we need to destroy the land for those left to live peacefully with others when the shooting ends.

By bombing them into the stone age, I mean to say, obliterate the radicals, by drastically reducing their numbers to that which would be stone age like, few and far between!

Actually, the bad thing about any war, is that there are always going to be those who are, and I hate this term, "Collateral damage!" Still, it is a fact, and it is the horrific side of any war. We can only pray that the innocent, those who do not support the radicals, are spared.

Of course, they lose homes, jobs, belongings, etc., and that is not easy. This is why when I pray during any armed conflict, I pray for our guys to go into Harm's Way; our leaders not to let politics lead their decisions [like Viet Nam, and others under the ridiculous ROEs]; and allow the people to be spared in a way that they can regain their way of living once the war has ended! So many lives are affected by war. And everyone who is innocent, needs prayer! Including the loved ones of our brave men and women, because what happens to their loved one on the battlefield will affect them also!
