I've read the "Five Love Languages".

I've heard of a few of the others.

You're right. there's nothing of real substance there.

I'd bet most could be picked up at Walmart or B+N.

Oh and all the "good ones" are on the special display tables, especially Sarah Young and Joel Osteen!

Other than probably the Thom Rainer books, don't think I would take the time (if I had it) to read any of them.

Noticed Dave Ramsey is on there twice, used to listen to him quite a bit but have cooled on him some, he used to recommend the #15 book fairly often on his show.

    Christianity Today

I will cite some (not all) items from two lists.

Best books of the year 1967, by Geoffrey W. Bromiley

Luther's Works :Vol. 5 Lectures in Genesis and Vol. 54 of Table Talk
    Luther, Selected Writings Four Volumes
Reformers in Profile by B.A. Garrish
Reformed Dogmatics by Herman Hoeksema *
Ring of Truth by J.B. Phillips*
    Christian Reflections by C.S. Lewis*

Choice Evangelical Books of 1967, by Robert L. Cleath

The Theology of Martin Luther by Paul Althaus
Evangelicals on the Brink by Carl F. Henry
    Reformed Dogmatics by Herman Hoeksema*
The New Testament and Criticism by George Ladd
    Christian Reflections by C.S. Lewis*
Know Why You Believe by Paul Little
Ring of Truth by J.B. Phillips*
    _____________________________________________________
    * = repeats from both lists.

I'd say that there were meatier Christian books being devoured by Christians several decades ago. The poor examples given in the OP reminds me of the rather thin gruel that many professing Christians subsist upon these days.

Were those bestselling or the person's personal list of great books? I know many who have made up a list of their opinion of great books that look quite different from the list I posted.

I don't know how well they sold back then --probably much better than they would today.

The original lists were the opinions of the two men --Dr. Bromiley (Best books of the year 1967) and Dr. Cleath (Choice Evangelical Books of 1967).
