The biggest obstacle I find discussing politics or the faith is that most are ignorant and are not interested in knowing the truth.

We spend a lot of our time as Christians' and Americans' studying out our positions in order to be sure we accurately can defend and convey our cause. I find when attempting to share God's truth I am not met with a hunger for truth but with a repelling ignorance aimed at disarming any argument that differs from their own.

I find slings and arrows such as :"You Baptists' are so judgmental". Or: "You are all homophobes." Or :" You think yours is the only way to heaven." etc.

As smart as the unprepared try to come across, they have nothing but a few canned responses that when thought out don't even make sense. Or they will always interrupt you and Never allow us to make a valid point. I find this a lot when discussing the political landscape. We are called bigots' and a variety of other names to keep us from telling what we have come to know as the truth regarding the direction of the country.

I suppose what I am getting at is that in the past there was honest debate with a true desire to get at the truth. That is missing in todays discussions. People don't research their positions any longer. They just defend (using quips and catch phrases) against anyone that doesn't believe in the " Anything goes" philosophy permeating society. Not really knowing anything about anything.:tonofbricks:

This is true, Soulman. It goes for anything from religion to politics to sports to tv shows. If you ever try to talk football in the southeast, you'll find yourself in one of the nastiest fights of your life.

Some people study out their beliefs in order to defend them in discussion, debate, and argument. Others simply hold to the belief that, if you don't agree with me, then you're wrong.

Why bother formulating a solid, fact-based defense, when you can just call someone names and run away? It's been my experience that people believe labeling someone a "racist" or a "nazi" is a solid way of winning an argument. Instead of having to prove a point, throwing the "R-word" at someone else just shuts down the argument. Why argue with a racist, right?

Like you said, people value the "appearance of intelligence" over actual "intelligence." They value the "aura of substance" over actual "substance."
