    “Obama is the smartest president of all time, you just are too stupid to understand him.”

    How many times have you heard something similar to that? Well, this is a good rebuttal.

    Republicans have higher “News IQ’s”, on average, by a margin of 0.7 points.

    From Downtrend:

    The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press recently ran a “News IQ” survey that measured “the public’s awareness of key facts in the news: from questions about conflicts around the world to the current minimum wage and the chair of the Federal Reserve.” And surprisingly enough (rolling eyes), it was in fact Republicans who performed the best.

    Cue The Washington Times:

    By a wide margin, Republicans proved more likely to know that there are more Shiites than Sunnis in Iran. They are more aware that Common Core is an educational standard and that oil is driving North Dakota’s economic boom. More Republicans can identify Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel’s prime minister. Fewer Democrats realize that ISIS controls territory in Syria, and that Ukraine was once part of the Soviet Union.

    Janet Yellen is far from a household name, but 27 percent of Republicans were able to identify her as Federal Reserve chairman, one point higher than the Democratic score. About three-quarters of Americans know the federal minimum wage is $7.25, but Republicans edged out Democrats by a single point here again. The only things that Democrats knew better than Republicans were that Liberia had an Ebola outbreak and that 15 percent are living below the poverty line.

    So Republicans know more when it comes to substantive issues (ethnic divisions, education policies, foreign affairs, etc.), while Democrats know more when it comes to the concerns of the poor and needy. Hah!

    Let me lay this out for those who are intentioanlly ignoring the main point of the op. .07 is irrelevant to the point of the op. the primary point is that liberals are constantly claiming that conservatives are too ignorant and or stupid to really understand. Any number even if it was .01 proves that to be false.

    Are liberals really claiming this though? Can you point out anyone that says this in a serious way?

    Obviously both sides say things like "the other side is stupid", I'm interested if there are serious claims being made.

    Remember, for each non-serious claim from liberals there's an equally non-serious claim from conservatives.

    0.7 ... what was the margin of error of the study, 0.7 would be meaningless in just about any survey I have heard of ... and what would you expect from the Washington Times.

    Which is irrelevant to the point of the op. You need to go back and read the op looking for its primary point rather than just commenting on others posts. That way you do not just miss the point.

    Matt - Seeing as Rev provided some links, I'm not going to tackle the "seriousness" of the claims. I'd rather relate my own experience. It might not be blatantly stated, but I've had college classmates immediately discount my opinions when they found out I was conservative.

    When I started questioning the policies and politics of Barack Obama before the 2008 election, I had a couple of "friends" label me as "ignorant," "unlearned," and I even got a "racist" thrown at me. Yeah, in my experience, there is an academic elitism that many liberals carry.

    By the same token, a lot of conservatives do the same. Both sides of the political aisle could stand to take a few steps back and look in a mirror.

    My point exactly. For conservatives to stand back and act like only liberals try and demonize their opponents is disingenuous. Conservatives do the exact same thing (Liberalism is a Mental Disorder anyone?).

    Using a 12 question quiz to prove that Republicans know more about the news cycle than Democrats speaks volumes as well.

    Thanks for the links. They were interesting. I don't have the time to read them all in depth at the moment, but 3 of them appear to be about the same study. Unless I'm reading incorrectly, they claim that those with lower IQs tend to gravitate to conservative principles more often than liberal principles because conservative principles tend to be more black and white and easier to grasp. The study doesn't say that ONLY those with lower IQs gravitate to conservative principles. Honestly, as a conservative, I can't say I disagree with the findings.

    Just because a cricism is leveled at one side of the political spectrum does not mean that an equal criticism must be leveled at the others at the same moment. If you want to talk about what Republicans do go start your won thread.
