Church Christmas Plays

    **If this is not the appropriate forum for this thread, I kindly ask the moderator to move it to the correct spot. I wasn't entirely sure where it should go, and General Discussions seemed a good spot.**

    Does your church have a Christmas play?

    I know several churches have started doing "live Nativity scenes" instead. My church still does a play the Sunday evening before Christmas. During our church officer elections every year (September) we elect someone to oversee this play.

    I was just curious if any other churches still had these...or ever had them.

    Our is of sorts. It is called the Hanging of the greens. While it is not acting out scenes it does involve singing, scripture reading, history reading, costumes etc.

    We tried to do the live nativity but had trouble rounding up three wise men. :thumbs:

    We're doing a re-written version of Dickens' Christmas Carol, designed to be evangelistic. (Cratchit gives Scrooge a tract, etc.) For some odd reason they tapped me to be Scrooge.... :confused: :saint:

    I actually started this thread because I was asked to direct my church's play this year and it's just been such an awesome blessing writing the script. I felt led to base the play on just the first two chapters of Luke. Once I got the scripture copied to Microsoft Word so I could start laying out the scenes and how the actors would be moving, I had the thought to start the play with one of the older gentlemen in my church coming in, dressed in first century apparel and carrying a scroll. He'll come on stage like it's his personal room, sit down and unfurl the scroll, and begin writing. At the moment, the narrator will begin reading Luke. I wanted it to seem like it was actually Luke writing the gospel.

    Like I said, it's been a fantastic blessing putting the script together. This is the second time in three years that I've overseen the play, and it's just so much fun each time. So I was curious if anyone else got to experience anything like that.

    On occasion, the children might sing a Christmas song and dress up in their awkward Jewish perceived clothing. It's all good, I guess. We have a Christmas eve service that can typically promote generosity towards missions of whatever means.......

    Sounds like a great plan, and I trust the Lord will bless it and glorify Himself.

    In Japan once I wrote a puppet play we called "Grandpa Truth's Christmas." The Grandpa puppet, who never lied, told the story of Christmas to the kids. We performed it in our church and in our sister church and in a local rental hall. It was a lot of fun and the participants were blessed as were those who came.

    I do not understand why Christmas is such a big deal in the Church? Yes, we should give to the poor (Shoebox thing), but I have great reservations about other stuff. Christians saw Christmas as paganism up until the late 19th century. It SHOULD provide us a reason to do good unto others, and proclaim His message though!
