    From another thread:
And now, many communities are starting to "boot" vehicles. First used in Denever, Co; vehicles are booted if the owner has outstanding tickets.

Now, if you car is booted - then you have to first pay the tickets then pay a large "admin" fee to have the boot removed.

Cities need the revenue from fees from vehicle infractions, like parking tickets, speeding tickets, etc. It's low hanging fruit.

To compare a city's need to gather revenue from repeat offenders that are ignoring their fine with the US government's efforts to deport illegal immigrants is an invalid comparison.

Actually, the purpose of this thread is NOT to compare parking fines to illegals.

I am contesting the possible problem of the boot.

For example - suppose a young lady is borrowing a friends car - parks in a bad neighborhood - comes out late at night - and is unable to get into the vehicle - and ends up being sexually assaulted.

At that point, will the US Congress pass "Judys" law that would outlaw boots?

The options are to tow the vehicle to an impound lot or put a boot on it. The boot is more economical.

Your scenario would be an unfortunate circumstance. The young lady would be able to gain entrance into the car, lock the doors for safety, but not be able to drive away. I presume honking the horn and calling 911 on her cell phone would be helpful. In any event, if this young lady were to be mugged it would not be the fault of the Denver police!

and everyone does NOT have a cell phone.

I contend that the Boot is an unnecessary enforcement measure. There could be a number of circumstances involved.

Remember a citizen is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The usual enforcement techniques have not worked. The options are tow away the car, put an immobilizer boot on it, or, depending on the citation, arrest the individual. The boot is the most economical.

If you get a speeding ticket, you have the option of a court hearing. The boot is typically only used after the person opts out of appealing the ticket in court. At that point the law considers you entering a guilty plea. So, yes, the use of the boot is justified.

Different Salty. This is city budgets. The issue is allocating resources of the federal budget concerning illegal aliens. As I said, go after the bad ones, spend lots of money on getting rid of them.

I had forgotten about the infamous "boot." I was assigned to D.C. in the early 90's and had the experience of seeing cars booted just about every day on my way to work.
