A hallway filled with American flags. Posters of the troops. Even a scheduled evening celebration that consisted of a 5-minute trailer with theatrical music meant to drive up your emotional state and give you goose bumps. Charged words flashed across the screen: Honor, Country, Freedom.

No, I wasn’t at a military recruitment event. It wasn’t even a government building or a movie theater, which often serve as fertile environments for statist propaganda.

Nope, all of this happened at church last Sunday. A place where, according to the cornerstone of the entire religion, we are to treat others how we want to be treated.

I don't understand how this sentence applies to your post. Would you be so kind as to explain?

The explanation can be found in the fourth paragraph of the OP. Is this how you would like to be treated?

    Yes like the soldiers.

Please spare me the red white and blue plea to emotion if that's what you had in mind to post next.

That particular form of propaganda while it may still be very effective is patently false. And I've already been accused of being an un patriotic traitor for not promoting the popular but false narrative that "we are a global force for good" so you can save yourself the trouble of repeating that accusation also. I've already heard it.

Our military serves only the interests of the elite. And they care nothing about the well being of the troops they use to carry out their unconstitutional foreign adventures.

That's not what I had in mind. I was just verifying that I understood. I am retired from the military. I always missed church on Veterans Day because I thought all the focus on the military inappropriate. I am sure we don't see eye to eye on politics or the military in general. But I understand your point here.

I see nothing wrong with wanting to serve your country. The problem is when our children join the military today they aren't serving their country. They are serving the interests of "a small group of dominant men" as Woodrow Wilson called them.

And those men don't give a hoot what happens to any of them.

Did not read the link but tend to agree with you. I don't like the American flag in a Worship Service, I don't even like the so-called Christian flag in a worship service. And while I am at it I don't like 7/11 music to a jive beat and women swishing their hips or people slapping their hands together with the "beat"!

You have a point there - that is if Ponch even reads any other threads.

Read one you've read em all. The "lefties the lefties the lefties". If it ain't about the lefties y'all don't want to hear about it and don't know how to react to it.

That's evident enough in this thread already.

    From the LINK:
In reality, these young 20-year-olds are sent off to kill people they have no quarrel with

Oh, but I do have a quarrel with them - think 11 Sep, think beheadings- think Ft Hood,....

This thread is not about serving your country....if it were we'd certainly disagree a bit more. But most in the military are trying to make a life for themselves. They are as patriotic as the next guy (typically no more, no less...except that they have skin in the game).

To the point of the thread - My issue with all of the recognition of the military and the patriotic services in church is that we are there to worship God. I do not care how much we love our military, or love our country...this pales when we come together to worship. Once I forgot it was Veterans weekend (the Sunday closest to Veterans Day) and I went to church. I was called to the front with all of the other vets and service members to tell of my service. This is not what church is about. I felt like they were honoring me/us when they/we should have been honoring God. That said, I have no issue with a church being patriotic....I just think it sometimes gets out of hand.

I always tried to stay low on veterans day. Getting special treatment and shaking hands never interested me.

Yes, remember the rage and anger get worked up, stay worked up and wave the flag that's the answer.

OUr country was founded on biblical principles. No other country would ever be able to say that. So recognition of things like our Military in the church, our country, etc has its roots in that very thing. The early churches in America always this this. Thanking God for our country, our Military, our godly families, our high school graduates is all as much a part of worship as anything else.

That is a wonderful myth and one easily believed. However it is a false myth ... one I believed until I really studied our history. I have no idea how many hundreds of books on US history I have read. I have yet to find one that supports your statement with facts.

Another wonderful myth and one that cheapens Christ's message by combining it with the government and military. Nowhere can you find Christ's teaching supporting this. Sources for this please.

I've seen churches that have a special place for the names, and sometimes pictures, of all members and relatives of members serving in the military, regardless of where.

They were remembered in prayer at every service and prayer meeting.

    Seems appropriate to me.

You are correct. Most of the Framers and Founders were NOT Christian. Many of them were Deists, but not Christian. This is the same as the lie that the Catholics used to justify the Crusaders killing everyone in their path.
