My wife and I both prefer the old hymns, but the church we attend only does contemporary music, so we decided to visit another local Baptist church to hear some hear some hymns. Anyway, they were doing something called the 'Hanging of the greens.' Anyone familiar with this? It seemed a lot like some stuff we seen at a Methodist Church, and had the formality you would expect from a Methodist Church.

Where does it come from? When I googled it, all I got was a bunch of Methodist and Ecumenical web sites which only gave the accompanying dialog for the service.

I was led to believe that some churches do that instead of a Christmas play. It's apparently a very somber service, from what I've been told.

I do remember seeing a book that had funny snippets taken from church bulletins and one of them read "We would like to welcome our visiting evangelist and his wife, Rev. and Mrs. Green. Please join us in prayer for them. Everyone is then welcome to stay behind in the sanctuary after service for the Hanging of the Greens."

There are different variations but we do it because we are a small church and some kind of play is not feasible. What it does do is it shows the history of the symbols of Christmas and how they can point to Christ.

You'd be a better sheephearder if you pointed out the biblical shortcoming of said items and truth of the celebration.

Either celebrate the birth of Christ or Santa Clause and Rudolph. Don't mix them.

I'm pretty sure he is capable of making the distinction and using it as a tool to do just that, which is what he said in the first place.

Just curious, what do you base your surety on.
"greenery" has no place in the Church and has no biblical connection to justify it. Did any of the Apostles ever mention such?

You could say the same about functioning electricity and indoor plumbing.

Nothing like throwing out a straw man argument.

No, it totally fits into his all encompassing scope of being not biblically justified and unmentioned by the Apostles. I fully understand what he is getting at but it's a pretty lousy hill to die on don't you think? It's also a petty jab that serves no purpose other than to be divisive.

Waiting to repent when you provide Scriptural support for it. Now that's being biblical isn't it?

Baptist take concern to be "Apostolic" in practice. Why do something that is never mentioned by the Apostles or early Church fathers. Not counting any RCC as a Church authority.

Does every version of it end in singing 'O Christmas Tree?'.

For those who think the Christmas symbols point to Christ, I would suggest you read "The Two Babylons" by Alexander Hislop.

But I didn't start this to bash the celebration of Christmas by the Church, but rather to know where the history of the thing. I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I'm sorry but I can't makes sense of that second sentence. You are quoting your own posts and I'm not even sure what the question is.

My second sentence was referring to the Church having "Trees" and "Greenery" and believing it's biblical or Apostolic in origination.

    You mean like:

    • invitation hymns
    • organs and pianos
    • church bulletins
    • stained glass windows with who knows what kind of designs in them
    • church choirs or, if you want contemporary, worship teams
    • individual communion cups filled with grape juice

We have all these things and I dare say T Allen has most of them in his church. None of them are talked about by the apostles. Hanging of the greens is no different than stained glass windows. Neither of them is necessary but they both add to the worship experience.
