I was considering the Boy Scouts (not anything weird going on here ….I have an 11 year old son) but there are many negatives…probably too many for my consideration. When I was young, I was a scout for a short time. My brother and I left the scouts to participate in the RA’s (Royal Ambassadors) at church. We enjoyed the program much more (basically, it was the same…camping, hiking, merit badges, etc… but they taught about missions and had Bible study). Just wondering….are RA’s and GA’s still around (I am assuming this was a SBC program)?

We have Christian Service Brigade at my church and it's been very good. I'm not sure about the other programs.

SBC President Ronnie Floyd's church features the AWANA program.
As do FBC Dallas, Highview Baptist Louisville, TRBC Lynchburg, etc.

JonC, I'm interested to know your objections to having your son in Scouts.

I have two sons, both in Scouts. I am active as a Den Leader in the Cub Scout Pack and a Committee member for the Boy Scout Troop.

So, Ronnie Floyd is now the SBC president. He was not only one of my professors in Seminary but the boss over the printing deparment in Seminary which I supervised direcly under him. Not a day went by without some discussion between us over printing theses, journels or something. He certainly had ambitions for sure when I knew him. I wonder if his attitude and theology has changed since I knew him. We didn't agree eye to eye with either.

AWANA (in which I've been a Leader and a Director) is very different from Boy Scouts.

I don't object to the Boy Scouts. But if there wore a Christian alternative that is what I would choose. I am apprehensive towards secular organizations teaching values, but may consider the Scouts. For me growing up I enjoyed RAs more. But some of this was the sense of community we had in that church. Again to answer your question, I don't object to the Scouts.

My suggestion would be to investigate and try out as many troops in your area as possible. You will find differing levels and approaches to religion in different troops. A good starting point would be to locate troops whose charter organization matches up with your beliefs. A troop chartered to a good Baptist church is most likely going to be more appealing to you than one chartered to the local community church.

Yes, JonC, they do still have RA's. It's sponsored by the WMU and it is an excellent program if run correctly. Of course its quality is ultimately dependent on the local leaders.

They do still exist. Gotta look around.

While Awana's have replaced RA's and GA's in many church's timeslots, they are not particularly similar in missions outlook.
