Noteworthy "American" Baptist from Old to New

    Please post a link or other information regarding "Famous" or "Infamous" Baptist throughout History.

    Of course we all know the earliest of men would be Jesus Christ Himself and certainly the Apostles and so forth but lets start around the 1700's and stay close within America.

    Stephen Houghton Cone from (Iknow I know) WIKI Pedia's article

    "At the zenith of his career he was probably the most popular and influential Baptist minister in the United States."

    I cannot find any sermons of his. The only other writing I can find concerning him is his funeral which I've linked above.

    How can you be "all that" and have no real records?

    I know many don't consider Roger Williams a real Baptist because he was one only briefly, but his legacy is undeniable.

    Add Isaac Backus, defender of religious liberty in Massachusetts.

    And whether you're a Landmarker or not, J.R. Graves cast a long shadow in the SBC and his influence is felt to this day.

    Cone helped found the American Bible Union to produce a Bible that would substitute immerse for baptize. He was a translator for the original modest revision in 1850 -- which caused a storm of controversy -- but died before the full revision could be published.

    I forgot John Clarke, founder of the second Baptist church in the U.S. (and maybe the first) and defender of religious liberty. His "Ill News From New England" documented the religious persecution rampant in Massachusetts Bay Colony.

    I think I would be remiss in this vein if I did not mention Thomas Helwys, father of the General Baptists in England, and the first Baptist to write on religious liberty in "A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity," which he dedicated to James I and for which he languished in jail and eventually died.
