I was listening to a recorded sermon last night and noticed
The preacher ended his words with type of grunt or hum.

To be an "good" preacher should I begin to do thisah every few.wordsah to be godlyah?:BangHead:

**NOTE: This is my 1000th Post on BB**

Check out this thread, T Alan: http://www.baptistboard.com/showthread.php?t=97726

We discussed the "hack" or the "uh-thing" at length. Some folks mocked it, called it an unspiritual manipulation, and stated that there was no scriptural backing for it.

Personally, I grew up around it. I've heard it all my life. If I'm preaching and I really get over into the Spirit, I'll even do it myself. Doing the "uh" or not does not make you a better or worse preacher. Mocking it is certainly not the way to go either. Every man has to preach in the way God calls him to preach.

Brother Willis (convicted1) can also tell you stories about this kind of preaching. It's not for everybody, but those of us that like it are quite attached to it. Again, mocking it simply because you don't do it is rude. Please try to rise above that. Thanks, bud.

Actually, I find it irritating - but maybe that's just me.

Use basic public speaking techniques: fill the lungs, then talk. Then one can get out an entire sentence without having to noisily suck in air every few words.

Don't forget to raise up slightly on your toes when you do the word "thingy". It gives it more emphasis as well as non-verbal communication.

    It was quite distracting.
Thanks for the link PT, I'll go there and not labor this one out. I apologize for any offense you felt at my expense. As for the 1k post, I'm closing in on you. I'll probably hit the page tonight and spam several post to raise my count. I hear there is a cruise at 10k (paid for by the advertisers, I'm told) and at somewhere short of that if you've been a back slapper of the right ones you get invited into "a secret group" of Men (probably Masons).

Yes-----there is a cruise that awaits each poster that achieves his/her 10k post!!! But its not paid for by the advertisers----rather---its paid for by the administrators!!! (That comes as a shock, I know----but they're all filthy rich----and the only thing that keeps blackbird(ummmm!!! That be me!!!) from becoming an administrator is he can't seem to let go of his ability to remain a middle class bb moderator!!!

As far as the masons go----the lucky ones are the ones wearing funny looking hats shaped like lamp shades!!!!! Its all in the handshake!!!! Its all in the handshake!! You gotta look close----I mean-----Birddog close, or you'll never catch on and will always be left wondering-----how come some folks are eating prime rib with the ship's Captain-----and I'm down here in steerage----eating cold spam and left over WW2 K-rations???!!!!!

You didn't offend me, bud. When it comes to preaching style and habits, I just have issue with people who try to say that something is "unbiblical" or "unspiritual" just because they don't like it. Hence my statement about rudeness. You were fine, though.

The hacking is a southern thing that preachers do mostly in country churches. Most of the hacking preachers I've been around say if your not hacking your not in the spirit. The south has a lot of hang ups when it comes to the way they preach. Having notes is a no no and Lord forbid if a preacher reads his message off.

This is like asking why some people wear sunglasses at night, or why college girls like yoga pants and LL Bean rubber boots. They simply think its cool to do it. I'm sure somebody did it a long time ago and was successful.

Copying another's lung problems is just plain ridiculous. As is attributing such aping to being 'in the Spirit'.

Charles Spurgeon on spurious fervor in public devotion:

"Never imitate those who are earnest. You know a good man who groans, and another whose voice grows shrill when he is carried away with zeal, but do not therefore moan or squeak in order to appear as zealous as they are. Just be natural the whole way through, and ask of God to be guided in it all."
