    I think that it is difficult to guess. Hitler was known. His successor was not. Only those there at the time probably could answer better.

    Georing was publicly appointed as his designated heir in '41. That changed in April of '45.

    My understanding is that they knew who the successor was, but not how he would behave.

    I should have been clearer.
