Not sure if this is the right place to put this request, but here goes:

Does anyone know of a place that sells full-size binders for newspapers that do not have any metal rings inside them?

I tried Googling this type of item, but every one of the binders I saw were merely notebook sized binders with rings in them.

If you know of anything such as this (NOTE: The binders can have internal clamps in them.), I'd be very grateful to know where I might secure them.

The reason I'm making this request is that I have quite a few old newspapers that are deteriorating quite rapidly due to their being stored in cardboard "Bankers Boxes." If they were placed in some type of binder, they could possibly be stored such that they wouldn't be as exposed to the elements as they currently are.

Bumping this because, so far, no one has posted any replies to my OP.

I'm heading to Virginia next week to attend a book presentation class with my daughter. I'll ask around.

Newsprint is a very low grade paper; it yellows quickly and degrades fast. Preserving large quantities is a losing cause.

    You've mentioned the important things...

    • Keep the paper out of the light, away from the sun.
    • Keep them dry - a damp or humid basement is the last place for proper preservation.
    • The ink is quite acidic. Spray single pages with an archival mist to reduce the acidity.
    • Mylar envelopes will help to preserve individual articles.

Deacon (my good "old"[?] SE PA Brother):

I appreciate some of your suggestions. Problem with WPE3BQL is that some of these papers are several years old and all of them are stored in those banker boxes.

I live in a condo that has no basement, and the humidity here in Middle TN tends to be even worse than what it can be in SE PA.

Do you know where a person might acquire the other items you mentioned? I've never done any archiving at all so this is new ground for me.

At the risk of stating the obvious, have you thought about calling the newspaper and asking them?

I don't know if they have it but you might try Mary Martin's post card shop on line. They sell other things, too. Maybe you will have some luck on finding what you want.

There is a big problem with the storage of newspapers as they are printed on paper that has quite a bit of acid retained in the paper. No matter how you store them they will deteriorate at a steady pace. The acid will simple eat the paper up as time passes.
