A couple of weeks ago, two students from Ryerson University’s Journalism program were barred from attending an event organized by the ‘Racialized Students’ Collective’ because they are white. You can read the initial report here.

There was debate back and forth about the move, but one response in particular, caught my eye.

A Huffington Post article titled, ‘Ethnic Minorities Deserve Safe Spaces Without White People’.

I couldn’t help but be taken aback by the title. Were my eyes deceiving me? Was I really reading someone blatantly argue for segregation by race?

The author, Aeman Ansari, argues that ethnic minorities have a right to claim public spaces to “share stories about discrimination without judgement and intrusion,” that is, judgement and intrusion by white people. She goes on that many students at Ryerson have experienced racism and that these spaces act as a forum where the ethnic students are protected from stereotypes and marginalization. Furthermore, she states that this is crucial in order to resist oppression.

What oppression might that be? Do you mean like being prevented from attending public spaces due to your race?

The two white journalism students that were asked to leave said they felt embarrassed by the situation, calling it, counterproductive. Ansari then blames individuals upset with this policy as “proof that they were right to exclude those students.” The piece also says that the organizers and attendees were there to “help each other get through social barriers and injustices.” However, I’m at a loss to pinpoint what those barriers might be. It appears they were able to put on their event and even discriminate against an entire race of people without too much fanfare.

Ansari goes on to say that “The presence of any kind of privilege puts unnecessary pressure on the people of colour to defend any anger or frustrations they have, to fear the outcome of sharing their stories. The attendees are trying to move forward by supporting each other and they should not have to defend themselves, they should not fear the consequences of raising their voices.”

I'm sure the Obamas, especially Michelle, are proud of this advacement of American culture.

What does this "advancement" have to do with the Obamas?

Groups on college campuses, de facto, do this any how. Student Government meetings are often "limited". Fraternities and sororities restrict their meetings. LGBTUVWXYZ restricts their meetings in a lot of places. Support groups often "separate" and "restrict".

Considering crime statistics, they may be without white people, but they're not even close to being "safe".

As long as we get the same privilege, I think it's a great idea.

Well it is true that a majority of CEO's, members of Board of directors, Fortune 500 Directors, are white. Do you not think education, experience and talent may have gotten them there? Just barely possible? After all, 78% of NBA players are African-American...There's that pesky experience and talent thingy.

Nope. White privilege got most of them there. When the educational and job systems are geared toward folks who look like you, and the folks who look like you run the boards of directors, chances are that the CEOs are gonna look like you too.
    Umm, no.

    That's a pesky money thing.

Just your opinion. In fact if corporations exist to make money then they will use directors, CEO's, board members who help make them money. Education, experience and talent. Not people who want to hold back people of color.

    Same with NBA teams.

And might it be your opinion that they got these positions because of education, experience and talent?

This would be willful ignorance on your part. But it's okay. White privilege tends to make folks want to stick their heads int he ground to deny the plain as the nose on your face truth.
Right. Again for all with a melanin deficit. Look at the Forbes 400 in the US and say that with a straight face.

The folks who have always been in control are still in control and aren't ceding that control to anyone who doesn't look like them.

    It's right there to see...

Zaac thinks that success is something that is ceded to someone...

Not something that is earned or strived for.

I submit this as evidence of the fruits of the Democrat plantation.

You may want to get your eyes checked if that's what you see. Gosh man, yall must think the world is stupid. The majority of the positions that white people have they have because they are white and the boards of these companies are majority white.

I'm sure that talent and education help. But there are a whole lot more people of color throughout the world who are educated , experienced and talented.
White privilege doesn't earn or strive it's privileged. You think there have only been a handful of black senators because they aren't educated, experienced and talented.

You think that the majority of fortune 500 CEOs are white because they have earned it and worked harder?
The Democrat plantation was run by today's GOP.
