    ..... Tithe?

The net vs gross has long been debated, but here's what one preacher said:

"Your 1st check should be your tithe, AND, it MUST be your LARGEST amount of any of your checks!!!

"How dare you give more to man than to the Lord's Work!!!"

    Comments?

What does he expect someone to do if their mortgage is over half of that check?

Never heard that specific demand but I have heard that attitude in some hyper-legalistic churches I know of.

Do you want a gross blessing or a net blessing?

Maybe this preacher was using Mark 12:41-44 as his PROOF text.

How dare we spend more time physically working for man than we do for the Lord!

I can say similar things but that does not make them real. While I believe in the tithe this guys reasoning is flawed. Give more to whom and in what context? God only requires a tenth not 60 or more.

Back in the day folks income was thought of in terms of stock and crops. Do you tithe the seed you put in the ground or the harvest in the fall?

The Lord's work IS man. I'd rather tithe by helping my fellow man on my own than contribute to building upgrades on a church building that is already adequate or overpaying the music minister. JUST KIDDING on the last one - music ministers are typically underpaid.
One can slip money into the songbook of the music minister or give to poor people in the church who aren't being adequately helped or give a visiting missionary a green handshake (and a green handshake does NOT mean a handshake while you limit toxic emissions) and still call it giving, IMO.

Then too, you've got the folks that come up to you asking for $$ for food, gas, baby supplies, etc.

As a personal preference, the only money I carry in my pockets is the plastic kind. I'd rather offer these people to pay for a meal, drive them to a gas station, buy them some diapers, etc.

That way, I feel I've complied with their requests.

Am I sinning by not carrying around wads of $$$ as I'm handicapped and live in a crime-ridden area?

I suppose one of these days I WILL find out. :jesus:
