Who on SermonAudio typifies GOOD expository preaching? And I mean the real deal; not somebody who merely claims to be expository.
Reason I ask is that there is so much awful preaching out there.....one one hand, you have WoF/Osteen garbage, on the other hand you have guys who will read a verse, attempt to explain it, then go on a rant about everything BUT the biblical passage....you know the type, they read John 3:16, then go on an hour-long tirade about the evils of flip-flops and clapping in church.

Who are the great preachers? Where can I hear them?

    Personally, I'd include the late David C. Auckland (d. c. 2009).

    Who was David C. Auckland?

He was my pastor at Faith BC in Sellersville PA while I was there from 1969-72. Sometime later (late 1980's - early 1990's) he resigned as pastor at Faith and assumed the position as Adjunct Professor (of Greek and/or Hebrew) at Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown WI.

He basically preached three different expository messages per week in three different books. Sunday morning he'd preach expository from one book; Sunday evening he'd preach expository from another book; and Wednesday evening he'd preach expository from another book.

And when he was dealing with NT books, he'd preach directly from his Greek NT.

He lived in an era that is quite different than today. Back then, at least in the SE PA area, the area was fraught with liberalism and/or modernism. Maybe that's one reason why he as pastor refused to admit new members "by letter"---even if your other church was called "Baptist." The fact that the American Baptist (i.e., "Northern Baptists") Convention had its national headquarters only about 50 miles away might say something to the extent of liberalism in my home area.

Of course, most every other "church" was liberal too. I think I could count on one hand the number of churches I knew of that weren't liberal at all.

Anyway, getting back to expository preaching, I still remember a good portion of Bible knowledge I acquired was from his expository preaching.

That's why I'd add David C. Auckland to my list of great Bible expositors.

This question is off topic, but:
how did a person become a member if letters were not accepted.

    1) The person would fill out an "Application" form which would include a brief summary of his/her salvation experience & other very general "spiritual" questions.
    2) The person would then be interviewed by the pastor & 2-3 elders/deacons
    3) Should those persons deem the applicant "suitable" to become a member, then that person would be brought before the congregation (This usually would be the very next Sunday service.) for their vote to approve that person for membership.

Please understand that was "how it was back then." IOW, how they ( www.faithatsellersville.org ) do it now may be completely different.

Just FYI--The current pastor, Paul Auckland [a Tenn. Temple graduate], is the oldest son of David Auckland. He [along with the advice & consent of the deacons/elders] has dramatically changed the format of FBC's services---if you log on to FBC's website you'll see what kind of format FBC currently has.

I would call it a Spiritual Assessment Form

and I like it - but I still would request the letter.

From the liberal Lutheran church the person attended??

Seriously, plenty of people "back then" came from "churches" such as this.

Here's a historical tibit about FBC Sellersville PA:

FBC 1st began meeting in a room that was in the Sellersville Fire Hall (next to the Branch Creek). By 1960, FBC broke ground for their 1st building along "the old PA 309 & near Ridge Road." (I think FBC's website may have a photo of this in its "History" tab.)

St. Michael's Lutheran church (THE "elitist" church in 18960), was shocked that FBC ever made it out of the Sellersville Fire Hall. Their reaction then was, "Well, they may have a building, but nothing will ever become of those IBF nuts, that's for sure!!"

Time passes & FBC expands its physical plant. St. Michael's physical plant remains the same as it was.

Time rolls on & with it so do 18960's utility bills increase rather dramatically. St. Michael's calls an emergency meeting for the purpose of calling on its ever-dwindling congregation to make some sacrifices in order to pay that church's electric bill. FBC increases its electrical usage to cover its ever-expanding physical plant needs.

Now, which "church" is God seemingly blessing more---FBC or St. Michael's??

Yes, I know that just because one church is expanding its outreach while another church is struggling to survive is NOT, per se, indicative of God's blessing. OTOH, in which church would you rather have your membership??

You might try contacting FBC. Their contact info should be on their website:

    www.faithatsellersville.org

I just checked their website. The address is:

700 North Main Street; Sellersville, PA 18960

I can't verify if they have any of David Auckland's sermons available any more. All I can do is to give you FBC's snail mail address.

FBC does have an e-mail address. You'll find it under the "Contact Us" tab.

Wish I could be of more help to you, but I haven't even been at any of their services since at least 12 years.

A preacher I really appreciated a great deal died more than 15 years ago. His name was James M. Boice.

Another man who died more than eleven years ago was Dr.S.Lewis Johnson. I listen to his sermons and lectures as often as possible on sljinstitute.net

It seems the only good expositors are Calvinists. But then many of those listing are Calvinists. Birds of a feather flock together. :)

Just curious, but why do you suppose this is true?

Is there something inherent about Calvinism per se that would cause a person who's a five-pointer TULIP advocate to want to be an expository preacher as opposed to, say, a topical-type preacher?

I recommend listening to Pastor Doug Mixer. He is the pastor of a small church in Central Maryland.
