    From the article :
    ===
Walk into the average evangelical church in America, and you will likely sing lyrics such as “I want my life to be a love song for you, Jesus” and “I want to fall in love with you.”

Then you might hear a sermon encouraging Christians to be “intimate” with Jesus and attend a “care group” where everyone is expected to share their feelings.
    ===

Name two churches where this occurs.

I thought your first contact with a church is with a pastor. You tell him you are a five-pointer and he tells you not to bother.

Have you been telling the truth? Or have you been attending services without that preamble that you constantly tell folks on the BB you give?

You should know better than to think.

BTW..... most don't even call back to extend the courtesy to tell me not to bother. And sometimes I've even called twice.....just to follow up. Once I was told by a reformed pastor that I would disrupt his flock and a PCA guy told me he doesn't stress doctrines of Grace...ie he doesn't teach it so don't mention it if you come to visit! See I live in a extremely catholic area......And they wouldn't understand. NUTS HUH!:)

    EWF,
I think the guy in the article took some cues from this book I told you about a while back:

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/078523215X/?tag=baptis04-20

I didn't agree with everything in the book, but he made some excellent points. And I'm for sure against the notion that we "fall in love" with Jesus. And I can also assure you, I don't get intimate with men.

Bro. ITL: I can name one church that has operated this way for many years.

    Mine. ( www.lighthouseministries.org )

Brother, I don't know about your particular experience(s) regarding "care groups."

Maybe they are different than mine.

Lighthouse became a "cell-based" church some 20 or so years ago. Yes, when we "changed(!)" from a Sunday AM, Sunday PM & Wednesday PM "corporate meeting" church, some folks left us.

Sure, we hated to see them go at the time. (Eventually, some did "come back after the 'initial shock wore off.'" )

But we also experienced new folks joining who liked being with a church that was probably closer to what "the church in Acts and/or other NT 'House Churches' to which Paul addressed most of his letters."

Then there's Jesus Himself. His "church" was basically a 12-member church when He was here on earth. (We won't go into the fact that 1/12 of His "church" probably wasn't "born again.")

Anyway, I love the idea that I can call on some of my (We call them "Life Groups") "Life Group" if I need, say, some physical work done in my condo. [I'm quite handicapped due to a stroke.]

When I want to deal with automobiles, one of my Life Group members is a car salesman.

I never knew of this fantastic film "Do You Believe?" until some one mentioned to me that it was being shown at a theater nearby. [NOTE: This was the first time I sat foot in a "Public Theater" since 1967. {This is a personal preference of mine---Your "personal preference(s)" on this may differ. If it does, so what? WPE3BQL won't lose any sleep over it!}.]

When I was "grounded due to my stroke," several Life Group members brought me meals and/or offered to drive me to their meetings and/or to the Sunday AM corporate worship services.

I could go on and on about my experiences concerning Life Groups.

No, nobody ever "forced" me to join one. (Actually the Life Group I'm now with is the third one with which I opted to affiliate over the years. [Situations such as what day of the week one chose to meet, my own work shift schedule {I was with a 24/7/365 work center with the phone company. My "usual" shift was from 1600-2400 hours.}, etc.]

Nobody ever "forced" me to attend services before we were a "corporate-services-only" church either.

As I said earlier, your experience(s) with a cell/"small group" type of church probably are/were different than I've experienced.

OTOH, just because you may have some "not-so-pleasant" experiences with a cell-based church format does not necessarily mean EVERY cell-based church is therefore "feminine."

    Again, from the article:

So what evangelical church in your area--name it--does this?

I would say your experience with a "care group" is vastly different from the one described in the article posted by EW&F. According to the article:

you might hear a sermon encouraging Christians to be “intimate” with Jesus and attend a “care group” where everyone is expected to share their feelings.

From what you described, this is NOT happening in your church. Sounds like your church has its priorities straight.

I think it does too, but then I might be just a bit biased too.

EW&F also might explain in a little more detail when he mentioned that a "care group" is where "everyone is expected to share their feelings."

Feelings about what? How one "feels" about what God might be "leading him/her to help a lost neighbor"? How one "feels" about the purpose of a certain book of the Bible? How one "feels" about the necessity of living for Christ?

The word "feels" can carry a lot of connotations.

Personally, once I received Christ as my Savior in April, 1966, I never "felt" lost, but some good Christians have had struggles about the security of the believer. Probably this was/is because that may have been how others (especially their own family members) were taught. Or maybe the church of which they were/are members have this misinterpretation of a doctrine as one if its tenets.

Having worked with aviation electronics, I know the necessity of relying on an aircraft's instruments is vitally important compared to how a pilot might "feel" his aircraft is flying.

His instruments might indicate that he needs to "pull up," but he might "feel" that his flight attitude is OK. Thus he may crash his plane and lose his life by depending on his "feelings."

I had a "feeling" that God may have wanted me to attend a Bible college, but I wanted to be certain that it was God who was calling me to attend one, and not just me calling me.

I asked my pastor at the time how I should determine who was doing the calling.

He gave me some of the best advice I ever had concerning this "dilemma."

He told me that if I "felt" God was calling me to go to a Bible college, then proceed on with the application process. BUT, at the same time, pray to God that if this wasn't His will to make it impossible for me to attend that Bible college.

So this is exactly what I did. I filled out the application, paid the application fees, etc. Since the college was probably several hundred miles away, the college warned all prospective students not to start packing for college until you receive their Letter of Acceptance.

Well, my work situation (and lack of much seniority) put me in a position that I would either have to be laid off OR "bump" back to a division in which I'd previously worked. This was on a Friday afternoon.

I kinda felt bad about "bumping" someone because I wouldn't know who it was that I bumped out of a job. You see, the company where I worked had just come off of a six-month's strike. I was in a much better position because I was single and was living at home with my widowed mother. OTOH, the person I might have bumped might easily have a spouse and/or children to support. After being on strike for six months, I'm sure that this person's financial situation was probably a lot worse than mine was at that time.

The college's Letter of Acceptance still hadn't arrived by that Friday.

I asked the Personnel Director if I could have the weekend to "think over" my decision. He said that he'd allow me the weekend, but come Monday morning, I'd have to let him know what that decision was.

In Saturday's mail, my Letter of Acceptance came!

So, come Monday, I KNEW what to tell him!

Four years later, I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA degree in Bible & Religious Education. (And soon after that I entered my graduate level education at a nearby state university.)

Did "feelings" enter into all of this? Well, God's timing proved to me that I "felt" called to attend Bible college.

I've heard some preachers say that it's always wrong to depend on your "feelings" about anything.

Well, again that may be true, but then it might not ALWAYS be true in absolutely every situation in your life.

Right now, for example, I "feel" that I should end this post! :type:

Does anyone hear understand exactly what "intimate" means. It does not seem so.
