Yesterday, our 4th was terribly rainy - all day long!!

Since I had cleaned house the day before and had not a lot to do, I watched a few of the Twilight Zone episodes from the all day marathon - but NOT the one with Telly Savalas and the talking doll!! **shiver**

There are just some things that people who live alone will NOT watch - morning, noon, OR night.

I got to thinking about why dolls scare me so. I've always known why. My dad's mother used to chase my younger brother and me around her house with a Charley McCarthy doll when we were pre-schoolers.

My brother used to run and laugh and giggle. :tongue3:  I just ran for MY LIFE and screamed in terror!!! Dolls give me the willies.

Anyone else have phobias and the story behind it?

Yep me too, but clowns....not sure why, but possibly the mask covering the real person underneath.

I have been reading "Hostage to the devil" by Malachi Martin....about possession, this is a book not to be read before beddy byes....very very frightening!

    Snakes.

When I was a child (in 3rd or 4th grade) I had a dream that the school was surrounded by snakes and we had to walk through them to get home. Don't know why I had the dream, but it was very realistic to me. I suppose I was probably afraid of snakes before that time (hence the nightmare) but that nightmare drove the phobia home. I'm actually getting over that a bit now.

Clowns with snakes might be worse.

Never understood why so many are afraid of clowns.

I fear being called on the spot for anything that requires me to get up in front of people. If it's my idea, no problem.

Phobias are irrational fears of things that pose no real danger.

I know without doubt that any tight space will get even smaller and I will not be able to escape.
Therefore it is not a phobia. :)

Spiders! I would get in a bed with a rattlesnake afflicted with a sore tooth than sleep in a bed that had a spider in it.

I don't know if it qualifies as a legit phobia. I have a reasonable fear of heights. Sometimes while in a semi-consciousness state betwixt sleep and awareness I deliberately "dream" something. I picture myself balancing precariously on a rocking chair high atop an unearthly mountain. A mountain so high it defies imagination. And a wind is blowing...

This, my brother, fits me to a "T" !!
(And those spaces DO get smaller if no relief is forthcoming IMMEDIATELY)

Snakes, I am cautious about.....but EELS give me the heebie geebies....no idea why, and in later years....lizards....my cats would bring them in to play with, frilly necked, a goanna once....cockroaches are nasty but I don't think that is an actual phobia rather than a simple revulsion!

Cockroaches. Specifically, the enormous water bugs here in eastern Virginia. Every once in a while after a good rain on a hot humid day, one of those monsters will find a way inside. I have trouble sleeping and I will not rest until it is dead.

Don't know if it's a real phobia or just absolute revulsion.

I have a legit fear of closed spaces. I get physically sick when I can't find a clear way out of someplace.

I was at the US Open (golf) in Hazeltine MN in 1991. Suddenly a powerful storm came out of nowhere, formed over the golf course and it started pouring rain and hailing. Lightning and thunder occurring simultaneously. Loud.

Forty thousand spectators were caught out in the open. Despite all the warnings not to seek shelter under trees there was literally nowhere else to go.

One man got killed when the tree he was under was struck by lightning and two others were severely burned. Less than 15 minutes earlier I had been in the same area as the lightning strike but had moved on perhaps 400 yards away (length of one of the holes.) I saw a golf cart pulling a trailer with medical personnel driving it and there was a body covered with a blanket/sheet in the trailer. It was the dead guy.

Ever since then I've got a healthy fear of lightning.

This probably wouldn't qualify as a phobia, but I still can remember a recurring nightmare I had as child living in our house.

My father was a very avid hunter. Once he shot and killed a buck whose antlers totaled at least 12-14 points. He had the deer mounted that included most all of his neck his head and, of course, that rack.

So where did he place this mounted trophy deer?

Right over the fireplace in our living room.

Well, as a child, I was mystified at this creature. Of course, he never moved, but those authentic-looking eyes gave me the creeps. I just knew that he was looking straight at me, even as I moved back and forth in the living room.

And he wasn't a very happy deer. I guess if you were shot dead and had your head and neck sliced off, you wouldn't be very happy about your fate in life either!

If that wasn't insulting enough, you were hung right over a fireplace that during the winter season was used on an almost daily basis. Now, how would you feel if your belly was hung over a very hot flame almost nightly for three--maybe four months in a row?

You'd probably think that certainly this ranks up there with being punished in a cruel and unusual manner.

I knew that this poor deer had to be thinking that there must be a better way to spend the winter season than this, and he was fixin' to get revenge on me for not freeing him and releasing him from this bondage.

He would somehow tear himself loose from his moorings and chase after me around the bottom floor and eventually up the stairway to at least the third or fourth stair before he stopped.

Anyway, that was my nightly dream.....A REAL horror for a little child, wouldn't you say so?!!?

I'm probably a little claustrophobic. I shun crowds and tight places.

Other than that, I acquired an acute awareness of ground yellow jackets from my ginseng/yellow root digging days.
